The Creative Crone: Aging and the Poetry of May Sarton and Adrienne Rich, by Sylvia Henneberg

Too often the elderly suffer “death by invisibility” long before their physical demise, but what can we learn from creative individuals when they grow old? This book examines the work of two major contemporary women poets to show how they confront aging in a deliberate and constructive way. Sylvia Henneberg reveals how May Sarton and Adrienne Rich have critically evaluated and embraced their roles as elder poets and “creative crones”—and in doing so offer a powerful resistance to age discrimination.

The Creative Crone highlights new dimensions in the works of both writers: one deeply engaged with aging but often overlooked by scholars, the other a prominent poet and feminist but not generally thought of in the context of aging. Henneberg shows how these writers offer radically different but richly complementary strategies for breaking the silence surrounding age. Rich provides an approach to aging so strongly intertwined with other political issues that its complexity may keep us from immediately identifying age as one of her chief concerns. On the other hand, Sarton’s direct treatment of aging sensitizes us to its importance and helps us see its significance in such writings as Rich’s. Meanwhile, Rich’s efforts to politicize age create stimulating contexts for Sarton’s work.

Henneberg explores elements of these writers’ individual poems that develop themes of aging, including imagery and symbol, the construction of a persona, and the uses of rhythms to reinforce the themes. She also includes analyses of their fiction and nonfiction works and draws ideas from age studies by scholars such as Margaret Morganroth Gullette, Kathleen Woodward, and Thomas Cole.

The lasting impression of these poets is that any evaluation of their writings—and any serious study of personal or political identity —will benefit from including a critique of aging. Together, Sarton and Rich establish a literary symbiosis that suggests strategies for reassessing and radicalizing our notions about aging, senescence, and literature. This new perspective on their work shows that creative and crone are far from mutually exclusive; considered in tandem, they renew the discourse on late-life creativity.

Review

“A satisfying, mature, and major piece of scholarship. The comparisons and contrasts between the two poets are consistent and illuminating.”—Barbara Frey Waxman, author of To Live in the Center of the Moment: Literary Autobiographies of Aging

“If the author thought that the subject of aging and women was a marginalized field, she has just made it major. It’s an amazing reading of two women poets, for sure, but an even better reading of something that matters very much.”—Jacqueline Vaught Brogan, coeditor of Women Poets of the Americas: Toward a Pan-American Gathering

Groping toward Democracy: African American Social Welfare Reform in St. Louis, 1910-1949, by Priscilla A. Dowden-White

Decades before the 1960s, social reformers began planting the seeds for the Modern Civil Rights era. During the period spanning World Wars I and II, St. Louis, Missouri, was home to a dynamic group of African American social welfare reformers. The city’s history and culture were shaped both by those who would construct it as a southern city and by the heirs of New England abolitionism. Allying with white liberals to promote the era’s new emphasis on “the common good,” black reformers confronted racial segregation and its consequences of inequality and, in doing so, helped to determine the gradual change in public policy that led to a more inclusive social order.

In Groping toward Democracy: African American Social Welfare Reform in St. Louis, 1910–1949, historian Priscilla A. Dowden-White presents an on-the-ground view of local institution building and community organizing campaigns initiated by African American social welfare reformers. Through extensive research, the author places African American social welfare reform efforts within the vanguard of interwar community and neighborhood organization, reaching beyond the “racial uplift” and “behavior” models of the studies preceding hers. She explores one of the era’s chief organizing principles, the “community as a whole” idea, and deliberates on its relationship to segregation and the St. Louis black community’s methods of reform. Groping toward Democracy depicts the dilemmas organizers faced in this segregated time, explaining how they pursued the goal of full, uncontested black citizenship while still seeking to maximize the benefits available to African Americans in segregated institutions. The book’s nuanced mapping of the terrain of social welfare offers an unparalleled view of the progress brought forth by the early-twentieth-century crusade for democracy and equality.

By delving into interrelated developments in health care, education, labor, and city planning, Dowden-White deftly examines St. Louis’s African American interwar history. Her in-depth archival research fills a void in the scholarship of St. Louis’s social development, and her compelling arguments will be of great interest to scholars and teachers of American urban studies and social welfare history.

Review

“In this well-researched and carefully argued book, Priscilla A. Dowden-White reveals the hidden history of Black community activism and institution building in St. Louis during the first half of the twentieth century. Groping toward Democracy shows how community leaders steeped in traditions of social welfare progressivism used the idea of ‘the community as a whole’ and the ideal of a democratic public culture to forge alliances and win victories in struggles against residential segregation and other forms of racial exclusion.”—George Lipsitz, author of A Life in the Struggle: Ivory Perry and the Culture of Opposition

Stories from the Heart: Missouri's African American Heritage (MISSOURI HERITAGE READERS)From Brand: University of Missouri Press

All along the river, from the front porches of Hannibal to the neighborhoods of St. Louis to the cotton fields of the Bootheel and west to Kansas City, stories are being told.

This collection of family stories and traditional tales brings to print down-home stories about all walks of African American life. Passed down from grandparents and great-grandparents, they have been lovingly gathered by Gladys Caines Coggswell as she visited Missouri communities and participated in storytelling events over the last two decades. These stories bring to life characters with uncommon courage, strength, will, and wit as they offer insight into African American experiences throughout the state’s history.

Often profound, always entertaining, some of these stories hark back to times barely remembered. Many tell of ordinary folks who achieved victories in the face of overwhelming odds. They range from recollections of KKK activities—recalling a Klan leader who owned property on which a black family lived as “the man who was always so nice to us”—to remembered differences between country and city schools and black schoolchildren introduced to Dick and Jane and Little Black Sambo. Stories from the Bootheel shed light on family life, sharecropping, and the mechanization of cotton culture, which in one instance led to a massive migration of rats as the first mechanical cotton pickers came in.

As memorable as the stories are the people who tell them, such as the author’s own “Uncle Pete” reporting on a duck epidemic or Evelyn Pulliam of Kennett telling of her resourceful neighbors in North Lilburn. Loretta Washington remembers sitting on her little wooden stool beside her great-grandmother’s rocking chair on the front porch in Wardell, mesmerized by stories—and the time when rocking chair and little wooden stool were moved inside and the stories stopped. Marlene Rhodes writes of her mother’s hero, Odie, St. Louis “Entrepreneur and English gentleman.”

Whether sharing previously unknown stories from St. Louis or betraying the secret of “Why Dogs Chase Cats,” this book is a rich repository of African American life. And if some of these tales seem unusual, the people remembering them will be the first to tell you: that’s the way it was. Coggswell preserves them for posterity and along with them an important slice of Missouri history.

The People of the River's Mouth: In Search of the Missouria Indians (MISSOURI HERITAGE READERS), by Michael E. Dickey

The Missouria people were the first American Indians encountered by European explorers venturing up the Pekitanoui River—the waterway we know as the Missouri. This Indian nation called itself the Nyut^achi, which translates to “People of the River Mouth,” and had been a dominant force in the Louisiana Territory of the pre-colonial era. When first described by the Europeans in 1673, they numbered in the thousands. But by 1804, when William Clark referred to them as “once the most powerful nation on the Missouri River,” fewer than 400 Missouria remained. The state and Missouri River are namesakes of these historic Indians, but little of the tribe’s history is known today. Michael Dickey tells the story of these indigenous Americans in The People of the River’s Mouth.

From rare printed sources, scattered documents, and oral tradition, Dickey has gathered the most information about the Missouria and their interactions with French, Spanish, and early American settlers that has ever been published. The People of the River’s Mouth recalls their many contributions to history, such as assisting in the construction of Fort Orleans in the 1720s and the trading post of St. Louis in 1764. Many European explorers and travelers documented their interactions with the Missouria, and these accounts offer insight into the everyday lives of this Indian people. Dickey examines the Missouria’s unique cultural traditions through archaeological remnants and archival resources, investigating the forces that diminished the Missouria and led to their eventual removal to Oklahoma. Today, no full-blood Missouria Indians remain, but some members of the Otoe-Missouria community of Red Rock, Oklahoma, continue to identify their lineage as Missouria. The willingness of members of the Otoe-Missouria tribe to share their knowledge contributed to this book and allowed the origin and evolution of the Missouria tribe to be analyzed in depth.Accessible to general readers, this book recovers the lost history of an important people. The People of the River’s Mouth sheds light on an overlooked aspect of Missouri’s past and pieces together the history of these influential Native Americans in an engaging, readable volume.

The Santa Fe Trail in Missouri (MISSOURI HERITAGE READERS), by Mary Collins Barile

For nineteenth-century travelers, the Santa Fe Trail was an indispensable route stretching from Missouri to New Mexico and beyond, and the section called “The Missouri Trail”—from St. Louis to Westport—offered migrating Americans their first sense of the West with its promise of adventure. The truth was, any easterner who wanted to reach Santa Fe had to first travel the width of Missouri.

This book offers an easy-to-read introduction to Missouri’s chunk of Santa Fe Trail, providing an account of the trail’s historical and cultural significance. Mary Collins Barile tells how the route evolved, stitched together from Indian paths, trappers’ traces, and wagon roads, and how the experience of traveling the Santa Fe Trail varied even within Missouri.

The book highlights the origin and development of the trail, telling how nearly a dozen Missouri towns claimed the trail: originally Franklin, from which the first wagon trains set out in 1821, then others as the trailhead moved west. It also offers a brief description of what travelers could expect to find in frontier Missouri, where cooks could choose from a variety of meats, including hogs fed on forest acorns and game such as deer, squirrels, bear, and possum, and reminds readers of the risks of western travel. Injury or illness could be fatal; getting a doctor might take hours or even days.

Here, too, are portraits of early Franklin, which was surprisingly well supplied with manufactured “boughten” goods, and Boonslick, then the near edge of the Far West. Entertainment took the form of music, practical jokes, and fighting, the last of which was said to be as common as the ague and a great deal more fun—at least from the fighters’ point of view. Readers will also encounter some of the major people associated with the trail, such as William Becknell, Mike Fink, and Hanna Cole, with quotes that bring the era to life. A glossary provides useful information about contemporary trail vocabulary, and illustrations relating to the period enliven the text.

The book is easy and informative reading for general readers interested in westward expansion. It incorporates history and folklore in a way that makes these resources accessible to all Missourians and anyone visiting historic sites along the trail.

The Santa Fe Trail Deserves Better
By Leo E. Oliva
One wonders how this book was deemed worthy of publication by a reputable press. Although there are some good sections, there is much outdated information and misinformation. The author apparently has no awareness of the Santa Fe Trail Association and the many relevant articles that have appeared in Wagon Tracks during the last 24 years. For example, Barile states, p. 36, that the number of men accompanying William Becknell to Santa Fe in 1821 is "a mystery," which would be no mystery had she read Pedro Ignacio Gallego's diary in Wagon Tracks (November 1992). Also, the author seems not to have consulted Louise Barry's Beginning of the West, which is filled with material from primary sources about the early history of the Trail. She appears unable to judge between the best and the worst of secondary sources about the Trail.
The volume includes a wide variety of material (much of the text about general Missouri history and folklore is good, as are some biographies, while the details about the Trail are weak), some with little or no relation to the Trail, and repeats myths and misinformation. There is confusion about which Indian tribes were located along the Trail. William Becknell did not traverse Raton Pass (pp. 81, 87), as any serious student would know. Most of the wagons used on the Trail were not Conestogas. There are errors that any good proofreader should have caught. There are some stories with no foundation in fact. The members of wagon trains did not escape tornadoes by digging ditches and driving the wagons into them, "then chain the wagons together for greater protection" (p. 94). One wonders how someone with so little understanding of Trail history could get such erroneous information published.

Dogface Soldier: The Life of General Lucian K. Truscott, Jr. (American Military Experience (University of Missouri)), by Wilson A. Heefner

On July 11, 1943, General Lucian Truscott received the Army's second-highest decoration, the Distinguished Service Cross, for valor in action in Sicily. During his career he also received the Army Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Purple Heart. Truscott was one of the most significant of all U.S. Army generals in World War II, pioneering new combat training methods—including the famous “Truscott Trot”— and excelling as a combat commander, turning the Third Infantry Division into one of the finest divisions in the U.S. Army. He was instrumental in winning many of the most important battles of the war, participating in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, and southern France. Truscott was not only respected by his peers and “dogfaces”—common soldiers—alike but also ranked by President Eisenhower as second only to Patton, whose command he took over on October 8, 1945, and led until April 1946.            Yet no definitive history of his life has been compiled. Wilson Heefner corrects that with the first authoritative biography of this distinguished American military leader. Heefner has undertaken impressive research in primary sources—as well as interviews with family members and former associates—to shed new light on this overlooked hero. He presents Truscott as a soldier who was shaped by his upbringing, civilian and military education, family life, friendships, and evolving experiences as a commander both in and out of combat.Heefner’s brisk narrative explores Truscott’s career through his three decades in the Army and defines his roles in key operations. It also examines Truscott’s postwar role as military governor of Bavaria, particularly in improving living conditions for Jewish displaced persons, removing Nazis from civil government, and assisting in the trials of German war criminals. And it offers the first comprehensive examination of his subsequent career in the Central Intelligence Agency, where he served as senior CIA representative in West Germany during the early days of the Cold War, and later as CIA Director Allen Dulles’s deputy director for coordination in Washington.Dogface Soldier is a portrait of a man who earned a reputation for being honest, forthright, fearless, and aggressive, both as a military officer and in his personal life—a man who, at the dedication ceremony for the Anzio-Nettuno American cemetery in 1945, turned away from the crowd and to the thousands of crosses stretching before him to address those buried there. Heefner has written a definitive biography of a great soldier and patriot.

From Publishers Weekly
Lucian K. Truscott Jr. (1895–1965) was one of America's finest WWII combat commanders, building a reputation second only to George Patton as an inspiring and gifted leader. Today he is remembered only by specialists. Hefner, a retired army colonel and physician turned historian (Patton's Bulldog: The Life and Service of General Walton H. Walter), corrects that by combining extensive archival and printed sources with perceptive analysis. Truscott served in secondary theaters: the Mediterranean and southern France. But from Sicily and Anzio to the 1944 drive up the Rhône valley and the successful concluding of the Italian campaign as 5th Army's commander, Truscott showed comprehensive skills in defense and attack, in amphibious landings and mobile operations. Hefner's Truscott is not a genius, but rather the master of a craft painstakingly studied between the world wars and applied no less painstakingly in combat. He shared the hardships of his men; he drank like a Texan, and a gentleman; he never hesitated to question orders he thought would cost unnecessary casualties. To call him a faithful and consummate soldier—as Hefner does in this model general-officer biography—does Truscott no more than justice. 15 illus.; 23 maps. (May)

Review
“Heefner sheds much new light in this fine work of original scholarship. Dogface Soldier may well be the most important military biography since Carlo D’Este’s well- received portrait of Eisenhower.”—John C. McManus, author of The 7th Infantry Regiment: Combat in an Age of Terror

“Lucian Truscott has long been thought of as one of the U.S. Army’s most competent commanders, yet, until now, he has fallen into relative obscurity. Wilson Heefner brings Truscott back to life with a first-rate biography that is richly researched and very engaging. Well done!”—Mitchell A. Yockelson, author of Borrowed Soldiers: Americans Under British Command, 1918

Wilson Heefner has produced a well crafted, deeply researched account of the military career of Lucian K. Truscott, Jr., a World War II division, corps, and army commander, and arguably the U.S. Army's most proficient combat commander in that conflict. That Truscott was a noted horseman, an accomplished writer, and briefly a senior manager with the Central Intelligence Agency during the early Cold War makes Heefner's biography all the more interesting reading."—Timothy K. Nenninger, author of The Leavenworth Schools and the Old Army: Education, Professionalism, and the Officer Corps of the United States Army, 1881–1918

"At last, a biography and a subject worthy of each other! Heefner’s exhaustive archival research reveals the life of one of the most important but least known generals of World War Two, General Lucian Truscott. Critically, the author does not finish his account of the general’s life with the end of public glory in 1945. Great events were stirring, and Truscott continued to be part of them. He served as the senior CIA officer in postwar Germany at the height of the Cold War, and Heefner has been able to uncover many new details of this period in the general’s life. The author integrates these key roles of Truscott’s career into a seamless whole—the story of a life devoted to service.”—Caroline Cox, University of the Pacific, author of A Proper Sense of Honor: Service and Sacrifice in George Washington’s Army

“Instead of churning out another biography on Eisenhower or Patton, Heefner once again has written a masterful biography on a lesser known—but nonetheless important—American commander in World War II. Dogface Soldier stands alongside his biographies of Edwin D. Patrick and Walton H. Walker, men who may not be household names but contributed significantly to Allied victory. Truscott earned the respect of such figures as Dwight D. Eisenhower and George C. Marshall, and now Heefner explains what made Truscott worthy of that trust. Historians and military professionals are in debt to Heefner.”—Kevin C. Holzimmer, author of General Walter Krueger: Unsung Hero of the Pacific War

An overlooked General
By B. Washburn
General Lucian K. Truscott, Jr., played a pivotal role in the war in Italy, often refered to as the forgotten front. I've long waited for a good biography of this admirable man (I'm still hoping his grandson will write one) but have had to settle for less. This biography, by Wilson Heefner, is adequate. It covers "all the bases" - his birth, education, summarizes his peacetime Army life, and describes in some detail his work in Africa, Sicily, and above all Italy. It's a fine book for a lay historian, and makes an effort to make the varying battles and conditions in Italy understandable. Truscott was overshadowed by more colorful personalities, such as Patton, but he was a very smart and very capable commander, who shaped Third Army into a weapon to be feared by the Germans. Yet perhaps his most memorable moment came after the war in Italy was over - at the dedication of the American cemetery. Truscott was to address a distinguished gathering, and he mounted the podium, executed a perfect about-face, and addressed the dead. He apologized to them, talked to them, saluted them, and then he left the reviewing stand. As one who had a cousin lying in that cemetery, I will forever hold the General in high esteem for that act alone. This volume describes that day, and the remainder of Truscott's life (post-war occupation in Germany, CIA work, retirement) quite well. Overall, it's a volume I would recommend for anyone with an interest in "The Forgotten Front" and in the occupation of Germany and the Cold War.

It Could Have Been Better
By Steven Zoraster
This book provides detailed coverage of Lucian Truscott's service in the US Army from 1917 until his retirement. We are told about his participation in Army polo teams, his service in Britain during 1942 where he helped start the US Army Rangers, his command of the 3rd Infantry Division in Africa and Italy, commander of VI Corp US Army in Italy and France and finally command of XV, V and III US Armies during and after the end of World War II. There is much information, including Truscott's emphasis on training and conditioning, his innovative use of mules and donkeys as pack animals in Sicily and Italy. And much discussion of his deployment of various unites from regiments to divisions in Africa Sicily, Italy and France. Heck, there is even discussion of his use of cavalry during the Sicily campaign.

All very good: This combined information is not available in such detail in any other single source. Yet, there are two problems. First, the reader needs to have background in the organization of the US Army and its doctrine during World War II. Armored division units like Combat Command A (CCA) and Combat Command B (CCB) are thrown out without describing their composition or doctrine about their use. Regimental Combat Teams (RCTs) are presented in the same manner. Special Service Forces (SSFs) also get superficial treatment. If the reader knows about them already, fine. If not, the author does not provide any help.

The second problem: The author mentions interesting details which could be covered in a biography of this level of US Army officer, but does not pursue them. For example, he mentions maneuvers involving several divisions in the Washington State area before the more famous September 1941 Louisiana maneuvers. I had never heard of these earlier maneuvers, and lessons leaned from them about the relative effectiveness of triangular and square divisions. So what were the problems with square divisions? (A square division had four regiments instead of three.) I'd like to know more. The author is not going to tell us.

Later, in North Africa, the author informs the reader that the French Army was not particularly useful fighting the Germans in Tunisia in early 1943. I am not surprised, but surely the reader deserves some explanation? Was it poor morale? Was it poor doctrine? Was it poor recruits? I bet all of the above, plus more....

In Italy the author mentions problems in doctrine and training that hindered cooperation between US and British forces. What were these problems? British manpower shortages are mentioned as a source of difficulties, but other problems must have been important. They are left for the reader to guess.

There are more examples of missed opportunities in this book. One other problem was the maps. In general they were good, but... But, too often important positions or objectives mentioned in the text did not show up on the maps. Someone saved a few dollars in map compilation and made the book harder to understand.

So, while I found the book interesting in laying out the military experiences of one of the best US Army generals up to and during World War II, the author stopped short of writing a really useful book for the general reader, or for the more interested a knowledgeable specialist.

A solid, in-depth biography of an exemplary American military leader
By Midwest Book Review
Dogface Soldier: The Life of General Lucian K. Truscott, Jr. is a solid, in-depth biography of an exemplary American military leader, who President Eisenhower valued as second only to Patton, and who took over Patton's command from October 8, 1945 to April of 1946. Truscott pioneered new combat training methods such as the so-called "Truscott Trot", played a critical role in winning key battles in North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, and Southern France, and was highly respected by officers and "dogfaces" (rank-and-file soldiers) alike. Dogface Soldier reveals the civilian and military education, family, and friends that shaped Truscott's life, his military genius and expertise, and his service after the war - especially his efforts to improve living conditions for displaced Jews to remove Nazis from positions of power, and his involvement in the trials of German war criminals. An excellent addition to military biography shelves, public and college library reference shelves, Dogface Soldier is accessible to lay readers and historians alike and very highly recommended.
