Southern Society and Its Transformations, 1790-1860 (NEW CURRENTS SO ECON & SOC)From Brand: University of Missouri

In Southern Society and Its Transformations, a new set of scholars challenge conventional perceptions of the antebellum South as an economically static region compared to the North. Showing that the pre-Civil War South was much more complex than once thought, the essays in this volume examine the economic lives and social realities of three overlooked but important groups of southerners: the working poor, non-slaveholding whites, and middling property holders such as small planters, professionals, and entrepreneurs.

The nine essays that comprise Southern Society and Its Transformations explore new territory in the study of the slave-era South, conveying how modernization took shape across the region and exploring the social processes involved in its economic developments. The book is divided into four parts, each analyzing a different facet of white southern life. The first outlines the legal dimensions of race relations, exploring the effects of lynching and the significance of Georgia’s vagrancy laws. Part II presents the advent of the market economy and its effect on agriculture in the South, including the beginning of frontier capitalism. The third section details the rise of a professional middle class in the slave era and the conflicts provoked. The book’s last section deals with the financial aspects of the transformation in the South, including the credit and debt relationships at play and the presence of corporate entrepreneurship.

Between the dawn of the nation and the Civil War, constant change was afoot in the American South. Scholarship has only begun to explore these progressions in the past few decades and has given too little consideration to the economic developments with respect to the working-class experience. These essays show that a new generation of scholars is asking fresh questions about the social aspects of the South’s economic transformation. Southern Society and Its Transformations is a complex look at how whole groups of traditionally ignored white southerners in the slave era embraced modernizing economic ideas and actions while accepting a place in their race-based world. This volume will be of interest to students of Southern and U.S. economic and social history.

Last King of the Sports Page: The Life and Career of Jim Murray (SPORTS & AMERICAN CULTURE), by Ted Geltner

Part crusader, part comedian, Jim Murray was a once-in-a-generation literary talent who just happened to ply his trade on newsprint, right near the box scores and race results. During his lifetime, Murray rose through the ranks of journalism, from hard-bitten 1940s crime reporter, to national Hollywood correspondent, to the top sports columnist in the United States. In Last King of the Sports Page: The Life and Career of Jim Murray, Ted Geltner chronicles Jim Murray’s experiences with twentieth-century American sports, culture, and journalism.

At the peak of his influence, Murray was published in more than 200 newspapers. From 1961 to 1998, Murray penned more than 10,000 columns from his home base at the Los Angeles Times. His offbeat humor and unique insight made his column a must-read for millions of sports fans. He was named Sportswriter of the Year an astounding fourteen times, and his legacy was cemented when he became one of only four writers to receive the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for coverage of sports. Geltner now gives readers a first look at Murray’s personal archives and dozens of fresh interviews with sports and journalism personalities, including Arnold Palmer, Mario Andretti, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Yogi Berra, Frank Deford, Rick Reilly, Dan Jenkins, Roy Firestone, and many more.  Throughout his life, Murray chronicled seminal events and figures in American culture and history, and this biography details his encounters with major figures such as William Randolph Hearst, Henry Luce, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, John Wayne, Mickey Mantle, Muhammad Ali, and Tiger Woods. Charming and affecting moments in Murray’s career illustrate the sportswriter’s knack for being in on the big story. Richard Nixon, running for vice president on the Eisenhower ticket in 1952, revealed to Murray the contents of the “Checkers” speech so it could make the Time magazine press deadline. Media mogul Henry Luce handpicked Murray to lead a team that would develop Sports Illustrated for Time/Life in 1953, and when terrorists stormed the Olympic village at the 1972 Munich games, Murray was one of the first journalists to report from the scene. The words of sports journalist Roy Firestone emphasize the influence and importance of Jim Murray on journalism today: “I’ll say without question, I think Jim Murray was every bit as important of a sports writer—forget sport writer—every bit as important a writer to newspapers, as Mark Twain was to literature.” Readers will be entertained and awed by the stories, interviews, and papers of Jim Murray in Last King of the Sports Page.

Jim Murray--Master of the Written Word
By Bill Emblom
First I have to say Jim Murray has always been my favorite sportswriter. I remember back in the early 1960's impatiently waiting for my Great Uncle to finish reading the Milwaukee Sentinel so I could see what Jim Murray had to say in his column. I have all of Jim Murray's books and this latest one does not disappoint.

The first part of the book is about Jim's years growing up in Connecticut and the breakup of his parents' marriage. Jim arrived in Los Angeles when the city was brimming with excitement with the Dodgers, Lakers, and Rams and Jim Murray was there to report it. He first started with the Los Angeles Herald Examiner prior to moving to the Los Angeles Times where he wrote his column for the next several decades. In addition to his skill in using the English language Jim Murray would often use his background in history in his humorous one-liners of which he became so well-known for.

Jim Murray's life was not all a bed of roses as he suffered through depression with the death of one of his sons and his first wife Gerry. However, a woman named Linda McCoy, who eventually became his second wife, literally saved him from an earlier death. Physical problems with his heart and eyes, which for all practical purposes left him blind, plagued him for several years as well.

This book is not a selection of Jim Murray's humorous columns. That has been done in previous books. This is a biography of his life. Jim Murray never knew how many lives he touched with his columns and how many of his one-liners are remembered and used in conversations today. I have a boxful of his columns covered with contact paper that I have saved over the years.

If you are unfamiliar with the writing of Jim Murray I would encourage you to try and pick up a copy of some of his previous books. They are a treasure. This biography is one as well and includes his full column of the one he wrote on the loss of his best friend, which was his eyesight. For those few athletes who didn't appreciate his humor it is their loss. Jim Murray was a master of the written word, and my thanks to author Ted Geltner for writing this book.

A Superb Biography of a Powerful Force in Sportwriting
By Roger D. Launius
As the editor of the "Sports and American Culture" series published by the University of Missouri Press, I was most pleased to see this book come to fruition. It is a superb addition to the series.

Many younger sports fans, unfortunately, do not know who Jim Murray was. No question, he was a one of the most significant sports writers of the twentieth century. Although he held a number of positions, including as one of the early journalists working for "Sports Illustrated," he is most noted for his longstanding sports columns in the "Los Angeles Times." From that position in the sports hierarchy Murray wrote highly personal, sometimes moving, oftentimes humorous, and always insightful columns on all manner of sports activities, personalities, and happenings. His voice was a unique one, along with such contemporaries as Jerome Holtzman, Shirley Povich, and a couple of other columnists. For the years that he was active, especially the 1950s and 1960s, Murray was one of the top five columnists in the U.S. As an elder statesmen in the sports reporting world in the 1980s and 1990s, he still had a profound impact on the course of journalism.

Among many other aspects of this book, I was moved by Murray's championing of desegregation in sports, and especially his criticism of the segregated University of Alabama football team in 1961. For his stand in the "LA Times" Murray was accused of every vile action imaginable and every name one could come up with. Murray was right and the segregationists were wrong; it is amazing how hard it was to force major football powers in the American South to enroll African Americans that would greatly advance the excellence of these teams. Even when the direct result of desegregation could be measured in more wins and fewer losses on the field the reluctance, and the vehemence with which it was opposed, was palpable.

Tim Geltner's biography of Jim Murray is superb. Enjoy!

My meeting with Jim Murray
By Robert L Fetzner
Having lived in Southern California, I would read Murray's column every day. There may have been some, that I didn't find interesting, but on the whole I found his columns extremely topical and entertaining. In his later life I met him and talked to him, about several columns I'd liked very much and remembered. He was so gracious to listen and even asked my name, which I'm sure didn't mean a damn thing to him, but he spent time with me and was very attentive. I've missed reading his columns very much.
