Entering the Fray: Gender, Politics, and Culture in the New South (SOUTHERN WOMEN)From Brand: University of Missouri Press

The study of the New South has in recent decades been greatly enriched by research into gender, reshaping our understanding of the struggle for woman suffrage, the conflicted nature of race and class in the South, the complex story of politics, and the role of family and motherhood in black and white society. This book brings together nine essays that examine the importance of gender, race, and culture in the New South, offering a rich and varied analysis of the multifaceted role of gender in the lives of black and white southerners in the troubled decades of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Ranging widely from conservative activism by white women in 1920s Georgia to political involvement by black women in 1950s Memphis, many of these essays focus on southern women’s increasing public activities and high-profile images in the twentieth century. They tell how women shouldered responsibilities for local, national, and international interests; but just as nineteenth-century women’s status could be at risk from too much public presence, women of the New South stepped gingerly into the public arena, taking care to work within what they considered their current gender limitations.

The authors—both established and up-and-coming scholars—take on subjects that reflect wide-ranging, sophisticated, and diverse scholarship on black and white women in the New South. They include the efforts of female Home Demonstration Agents to defeat debilitating diseases in rural Florida and the increasing participation of women in historic preservation at Monticello. They also reflect unique personal stories as diverse as lobbyist Kathryn Dunaway’s efforts to defeat the Equal Rights Amendment in Georgia and Susan Smith’s depiction by the national media as a racist southerner during coverage of her children’s deaths.

Taken together, these nine essays contribute to the picture of women increasing their movement into political and economic life while all too often still maintaining their gendered place as determined by society. Their rich insights provide new ways to consider the meaning and role of gender in the post–Civil War South.

From a children's challenge to segregated recreational spaces in New Orleans, to black women's participation in the 1959 volunteer ticket campaign in Memphis Tennessee, to how white women's organizations in Georgia debated suffrage, each essay focuses upon a pivotal moment illuminating the drastic changes rippling through society. An index for easy reference enhances this informed and informative anthology, highly recommended especially for college library collections.

Colonization After Emancipation: Lincoln and the Movement for Black Resettlement, by Phillip W. Magness, Sebastian N. Page

History has long acknowledged that President Abraham Lincoln, the Great Emancipator, had considered other approaches to rectifying the problem of slavery during his administration. Prior to Emancipation, Lincoln was a proponent of colonization: the idea of sending African American slaves to another land to live as free people. Lincoln supported resettlement schemes in Panama and Haiti early in his presidency and openly advocated the idea through the fall of 1862. But the bigoted, flawed concept of colonization never became a permanent fixture of U.S. policy, and by the time Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, the word “colonization” had disappeared from his public lexicon. As such, history remembers Lincoln as having abandoned his support of colonization when he signed the proclamation. Documents exist, however, that tell another story.             Colonization after Emancipation: Lincoln and the Movement for Black Resettlement explores the previously unknown truth about Lincoln’s attitude toward colonization. Scholars Phillip W. Magness and Sebastian N. Page combed through extensive archival materials, finding evidence, particularly within British Colonial and Foreign Office documents, which exposes what history has neglected to reveal—that Lincoln continued to pursue colonization for close to a year after emancipation. Their research even shows that Lincoln may have been attempting to revive this policy at the time of his assassination.            Using long-forgotten records scattered across three continents—many of them untouched since the Civil War—the authors show that Lincoln continued his search for a freedmen’s colony much longer than previously thought. Colonization after Emancipation reveals Lincoln’s highly secretive negotiations with the British government to find suitable lands for colonization in the West Indies and depicts how the U.S. government worked with British agents and leaders in the free black community to recruit emigrants for the proposed colonies. The book shows that the scheme was never very popular within Lincoln’s administration and even became a subject of subversion when the president’s subordinates began battling for control over a lucrative “colonization fund” established by Congress.            Colonization after Emancipation reveals an unexplored chapter of the emancipation story. A valuable contribution to Lincoln studies and Civil War history, this book unearths the facts about an ill-fated project and illuminates just how complex, and even convoluted, Abraham Lincoln’s ideas about the end of slavery really were.

A great book, a must read for Civil War fans
By Daniel
This is a rare book that is bound to cause some controversy in the academic community. Printed by the University of Missouri, Magness and Page, through painstaking research have uncovered new evidence that definitively proves that Lincoln was actively pursuing colonization projects after the issuing of the emancipation proclamation. One of which was highly developed (British Honduras), and two others which are only know to have been in their infancy stage (Suriname and Guiana).

It is a well documented fact that Lincoln pursued colonization in his first two years. $600,000 had been set aside to fund such projects, Lincoln made speeches about it, he encouraged prominent black men to get on board with colonization and even convinced some to go to Île à Vache (which ended up in disaster). But after Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation, all colonization speech abruptly ended.

To explain this, historians have agreed on two arguments concerning Lincoln's views on race and colonization. The "lullaby thesis" and the "change of heart thesis." The lullaby thesis primarily argues that Lincoln was a supporter of colonization only as a means to trick slave states into adopting emancipation and then never seriously go through with colonization, so in other words to "lull" them. This of course ignores the fact that Lincoln was an active advocate of the America Colonization Society for most of his adult life, but some very distinguished historians subscribe to this.

The other explanation is that Lincoln had a sudden change of heart. The Île à Vache colony failed, the Republican party was mostly against colonization, Lincoln had trouble convincing free blacks to resettle and he saw that blacks could make good soldiers.

Therefor this book essentially argues against those two points. I don't want to write about every fact of the book, but in light of the new discoveries that Magness and Page made, it is much more plausible that Lincoln was still struggling with his beliefs on race and the future of blacks. Since the war was fought to reunite the country and not over black civil rights, Lincoln wrestled with how to repair the nation after the war. And if colonization could help that goal, he was a supporter of it. The book is in no way a screed or a condemnation about Lincoln, but it is a more accurate reflection on how he intellectualized race, one that is not as pretty or progressive as the Lincoln we learn about in school.

Colonization after Emancipation- A must read
By Laura
Colonization After Emancipation delves deep into the masked secrets of Lincoln. This book is well written and displays obvious indications of thorough research. Colonization After Emancipation is no ordinary history book; the authors allow the reader to view our history and the workings of government in a new light. It's refreshing to see the authors attempt to understand the motivations behind Lincoln's actions instead of glorifying his presidency as so many others have. This is one piece of history you do not want to miss out on.

An insightful read
By Steve
Dr. Magness new research presented in this book sheds new light on President Lincoln's intentions for the freed slaves following the Civil War. Working off of previously unpublished documents, the author presents an unbiased view on how Lincoln planned to effectively deport the newly emancipated. The information conveyed within this book could set the stage for a reexamining of the his presidency, especially certain decisions, through the lens of someone whose presidential hallmark seems to have been beset with hidden motives.

Lincoln and the Politics of Christian Love, by Grant N. Havers

America has seen faith-based initiatives and “the audacity of hope” in twenty-first-century politics, but few participants in our political scene have invoked the other Christian virtue of charity as a guiding principle. Abraham Lincoln extolled the merit of “loving thy neighbor as thyself,” especially as a critique of the hypocrisy of slavery, but a discussion of Christian love is noticeably absent from today’s debates about religion and democracy.

In this provocative book, Grant Havers argues that charity is a central tenet of what Lincoln once called America’s “political religion.” He explores the implications of making Christian love the highest moral standard for American democracy, showing how Lincoln’s legacy demands that a true democracy be charitable toward all—and that only a people who lived according to such ideals could succeed in building democracy as Lincoln understood it.

Havers argues that it is simplistic to conflate Lincoln’s invocation of “with charity for all” with his abiding support for the ideal of human equality. The ethic of charity in his view also brought a uniquely Christian realism to the universalism of democracy. He also describes how, since World War I, intellectuals and political leaders have denied that there exists a necessary relation between democracy and Christian love, proposing that democracy is sufficiently ethical without reliance on a specific religious tradition. Today’s neoconservatives and liberals instead posit a universal yearning for democracy that requires no foundation in the ethic of charity. Havers shows that this democratic universalism, espoused by those who believe a “chosen people” should uphold the natural rights of humanity, is alien to the sober thought of both the founders and Lincoln.

This carefully argued work defends Lincoln’s understanding of charity as essential to democracy while emphasizing the difficulty of fusing this ethic with the desire to spread democracy to people who do not share America’s Christian heritage. In considering the prospect of America’s leaders rediscovering a moral foreign policy based on charity rather than the costly idolization of democracy, Lincoln and the Politics of Christian Love makes a timely contribution to the wider debate over both the meaning of religion in American politics and the mission of America in the world—and opens a new window on Lincoln’s lasting legacy.

An Unusual Lincoln Study
By C. S. Morrissey
Frank J. Williams, founding Chair of The Lincoln Forum, in Civil War Book Review (Spring 2010):

"Weaving a rich tapestry of insights from political science and literature and American religious history and political theory, Lincoln and the Politics of Christian Love is a major contribution to the study of American political identity. Grant N. Havers makes plain that civic charity, while commonly rejected as irrelevant or even harmful to political engagement, has been integral to our national character, even if it is not a panacea for the rest of the world. Nor should it be 'a quasi-religious mission to spread democracy' which 'may continue to harm the very image and stability of the nation' (182)."

Paul Gottfried also reviews this book:

"I recommend highly Grant Havers's incisive study of Lincoln as a rhetorician. Unlike recent hagiography on Lincoln, which celebrates him as a precursor of global democratic revolution or the Obama administration, Havers examines Lincoln as a champion of a specifically nineteenth-century American Protestant worldview. He shows that Lincoln's opposition to slavery came out of an explicitly Christian view of charity, although, as Havers insists, this view did not require Lincoln to wage a bloody civil war in order to free slaves or to inflict a vengeful and corrupt Reconstruction upon the defeated South afterwards.

"The view Havers presents is essentially the one that the Southern conservative Richard Weaver expounded in his study of Lincoln's rhetoric. Although sympathetic to the Lost Cause, Weaver was so moved by Lincoln's arguments from principle that he favorably contrasted them to the speeches of Edmund Burke, the renowned opponent opponent of the French revolution who argued from expedience. Among the many merits of this gracefully composed and well documented monograph is that it makes clear why generations of small-town, devoutly Protestant Republicans memorized Lincoln's speeches as models of what they were, namely, Christian charity. One can of course appreciate these speeches without hating the Southern conservative tradition or disdaining such Christian gentlemen and gallant warriors as Lee and Jackson.

"Nowhere does Havers suggest that these loyalties are incompatible. Nor does he defend the carnage caused by the Late Unpleasantness. What he focuses on is Lincoln's religious vision, as reflected in his oratory. Speaking for myself, I fully agree with Havers's response to Lincoln as a public speaker. His speeches, with their quotations from the King James Bible used to brilliant effect, are among the most moving that have been given in the English tongue." (October 15, 2009)

A thought-provoking read and worth extended study
By Midwest Book Review
Lincoln and the Politics of Christian Love is a remarkable re-examination of the role of Christian faith, love, and charity in the politics of Lincoln's era. Lincoln himself considered the Christian ideal of "loving thy neighbor as oneself" an indictment of slavery; author Grant N. Havers further explains how an effective democracy can only thrive when it is charitable toward all, and only those who embrace such an ideal of universal love and charity, as propagated by the moral standard of Christian love, can be successful in implementing and building democracy. Since World War I, political and philosophical thinkers have postulated that democracy is sufficiently ethical as a strictly secular institution, without the cornerstone of Christian love; Havers persuasively argues against this widespread belief and notes that it would have been alien to many of America's founders and to Lincoln. A solid re-examination of the philosophical, historical, and practical role of Christian charity in Lincoln's legacy, Lincoln and the Politics of Christian Love is a thought-provoking read and worth extended study (especially given America's current struggles to bring democracy to non-Christian peoples and nations) regardless of whether one agrees with the author's premises.

Modernist Travel Writing: Intellectuals Abroad, by David G. Farley

As the study of travel writing has grown in recent years, scholars have largely ignored the literature of modernist writers. Modernist Travel Writing: Intellectuals Abroad, by David Farley, addresses this gap by examining the ways in which a number of writers employed the techniques and stylistic innovations of modernism in their travel narratives to variously engage the political, social, and cultural milieu of the years between the world wars.

Modernist Travel Writing argues that the travel book is a crucial genre for understanding the development of modernism in the years between the wars, despite the established view that travel writing during the interwar period was largely an escapist genre—one in which writers hearkened back to the realism of nineteenth-century literature in order to avoid interwar anxiety. Farley analyzes works that exist on the margins of modernism, generically and geographically, works that have yet to receive the critical attention they deserve, partly due to their classification as travel narratives and partly because of their complex modernist styles.

The book begins by examining the ways that travel and the emergent travel regulations in the wake of the First World War helped shape Ezra Pound’s Cantos. From there, it goes on to examine E. E. Cummings’s frustrated attempts to navigate the “unworld” of Soviet Russia in his book Eimi,Wyndham Lewis’s satiric journey through colonial Morocco in Filibusters in Barbary, and Rebecca West’s urgent efforts to make sense of the fractious Balkan states in Black Lamb and Grey Falcon. These modernist writers traveled to countries that experienced most directly the tumult of revolution, the effects of empire, and the upheaval of war during the years between World War I and World War II. Farley’s study focuses on the question of what constitutes “evidence” for Pound, Lewis, Cummings, and West as they establish their authority as eyewitnesses, translate what they see for an audience back home, and attempt to make sense of a transformed and transforming modern world.

Modernist Travel Writing makes an original contribution to the study of literary modernism while taking a distinctive look at a unique subset within the growing field of travel writing studies. David Farley’s work will be of interest to students and teachers in both of these fields as well as to early-twentieth-century literary historians and general enthusiasts of modernist studies.

Review

“This is an incisive study showing the instrumental role of traveling and travel writing in the late phase of modernism. Whether it is Wyndham Lewis in Morocco, Rebecca West in the Balkans, E. E. Cummings in [Soviet] Russia, or Ezra Pound in France—in each case, traveling was productive of an awareness and a formal repertoire germane to the writer’s respective literary project. David Farley’s book is part of an ongoing reassessment of modernism’s vital historical, cultural, and political contexts.”—Bernard Schweizer, author of Radicals on the Road: The Politics of English Travel Writing in the 1930s

The Vanishing Newspaper [2nd Ed]: Saving Journalism in the Information Age, by Philip Meyer

Five years ago in The Vanishing Newspaper, Philip Meyer offered the newspaper industry a business model for preserving and stabilizing the social responsibility functions of the press in a way that could outlast technology-driven changes in media forms. Now he has updated this groundbreaking volume, taking current declines in circulation and the number of dailies into consideration and offering a greater variety of ways to save journalism.Meyer’s “influence model” is based on the premise that a newspaper’s main product is not news or information, but influence: societal influence, which is not for sale, and commercial influence, which is. The model is supported by an abundance of empirical evidence, including statistical assessments of the quality and influence of the journalist’s product, as well as its effects on business success.Meyer now applies this empirical evidence to recent developments, such as the impact of Craigslist and current trends in information technologies. New charts show how a surge in newsroom employment propped up readership in the 1980s, and data on the effects of newsroom desegregation are now included. Meyer’s most controversial suggestion, making certification available for reporters and editors, has been gaining ground. This new edition discusses several examples of certificate programs that are emerging in organizations both old and new.Understanding the relationship between quality and profit probably will not save traditional newspapers, but Meyer argues that such knowledge can guide new media enterprises. He believes that we have the tools to sustain high-quality journalism and preserve its unique social functions, though in a transformed way.

Review

“Philip Meyer has set out to prove a point: that there is a strong correlation between newspaper quality and newspaper profits. Throughout, he presents powerful evidence that good journalism is an important shareholder value that can serve more traditional shareholder interests in quarterly earnings and rising stock prices.”—Robert Giles

“Philip Meyer is highly qualified, and he has made an important effort to analyze editorial quality and profitability that deserves to be aired, debated, and built upon.”—Gilbert Cranberg

Praise for the first edition, a Choice Outstanding Academic Title:

“Resplendent with vivid examples and analogies that illustrate its concepts and conclusions, this book poses practical suggestions for reviving U.S. journalism.”—Choice

Famed newspaper death prediction was anything but
By JET
No history of newspapering in the post World War II era would be complete without reference to this all-encompassing work by Meyer.
He brings to the page not only a significant back-story in newspaper journalism as he experienced it in the US as newspapers began to decline, but also his considerable experience as an academic and teacher.
His many student-centred research projects into all aspects of the newspaper business enable him to write with authority about the trends.
He is perhaps best-known for his prediction that the last newspaper will be printed in 2044, but in this book - now in its second version - he is at pains to say that was not a prediction at all.
As he says, he merely "straight-lined" a couple of trend graphs and noted where they intersected with rock bottom. As he says, nature throws us curves and something is likely to intercede well before that fateful year.
This book is an essential tool for anyone trying to make sense of what's happening to what was once a seemingly impregnable industry.

Just what I needed
By Repps Hudson
I have used the first edition of Philip Meyer's book, so I ordered the second edition for my class on Global Media. The students liked it and yet they thought it was rather dry because Meyer tries to quantify much of what has happened in newspapers in the last 20 years or so.
But that was what I wanted, so the book works just fine as far as I can concerned. Meyer put a lot of work into writing and updating this book and lays down an academic basis for understanding the profound changes under way in newspapers. Some are surviving and really changing with the times.

Very Informative
By CrimsonYell
The Vanishing Newspaper provides a great overview on the newspaper industry's history and its probable future. It is written in an academic manner, with many charts and footnotes and lots of statistical analysis. The reading is heavy, but full of great information. I refuse to pay more than $10 for a Kindle book as a general rule, but I made an exception with the Vanishing Newspaper and I don't regret it. Still, this is a lot of money for something that you ultimately don't own. The content is worth 5 stars, but I can't give this purchase 5 stars because it is too expensive for an electronic book.

The World, the Flesh, and the Devil: A History of Colonial St. Louis, by Patricia Cleary

As Anglo-American colonists along the Atlantic seaboard began to protest British rule in the 1760s, a new settlement was emerging many miles west. St. Louis, founded simply as a French trading post, was expanding into a diverse global village. Few communities in eighteenth-century North America had such a varied population: indigenous Americans, French traders and farmers, African and Indian slaves, British officials, and immigrant explorers interacted there under the weak guidance of the Spanish governors. As the city’s significance as a hub of commerce grew, its populace became increasingly unpredictable, feuding over matters large and small and succumbing too often to the temptations of “the world, the flesh, and the devil.” But British leaders and American Revolutionaries still sought to acquire the area, linking St. Louis to the era’s international political and economic developments and placing this young community at the crossroads of empire.

With its colonial period too often glossed over in histories of both early America and the city itself, St. Louis merits a new treatment. The first modern book devoted exclusively to the history of colonial St. Louis, The World, the Flesh, and the Devil illuminates how its people loved, fought, worshipped, and traded. Covering the years from the settlement’s 1764 founding to its 1804 absorption into the young United States, this study reflects on the experiences of the village’s many inhabitants.

The World, the Flesh, and the Devil recounts important, neglected episodes in the early history of St. Louis in a narrative drawn from original documentary records. Chapters detail the official censure of the illicit union at the heart of St. Louis’s founding family, the 1780 battle that nearly destroyed the village, Spanish efforts to manage commercial relations between Indian peoples and French traders, and the ways colonial St. Louisans tested authority and thwarted traditional norms. Patricia Cleary argues that St. Louis residents possessed a remarkable willingness to adapt and innovate, which enabled them to survive the many challenges they faced.

The interior regions of the U.S. have been largely relegated to the margins of colonial American history, even though their early times were just as dynamic and significant as those that occurred back east. The World, the Flesh, and the Devil is an inclusive, wide-ranging, and overdue account of the Gateway city’s earliest years, and this engaging book contributes to a comprehensive national history by revealing the untold stories of Upper Louisiana’s capital.

Review

“Patricia Cleary’s new book on early St. Louis is an excellent addition to the growing literature on the history of this fascinating place.” – Jay Gitlin, Indiana Magazine of History

“A clear exposition of Spanish rule in colonial St. Louis and a fascinating look at the ‘intimate frontiers’ of a critical contact zone, Cleary’s book provides a rich history of a place she characterizes as a ‘global village … tied to a vast territory as a center of commercial exchange’ (p. 37).” – Jay Gitlin, Indiana Magazine of History

“Cleary’s nuanced portrait captures the texture of everyday life with gripping tales about spoiled food, drunken soldiers, unhappy slaves, disgruntled priests, and philandering spouses. These previously untold stories enrich the narrative and provide a more complete picture of St. Louis’s earliest years and its cultural diversity.”—William E. Foley, author of The Genesis of Missouri: From Wilderness Outpost to Statehood and coauthor of The First Chouteaus: River Barons of Early St. Louis

The Present State of Scholarship in the History of Rhetoric: A Twenty-first Century GuideFrom Brand: University of Missouri

Through two previous editions, The Present State of Scholarship in Historical and Contemporary Rhetoric has not only introduced new scholars to interdisciplinary research but also become a standard research tool in a number of fields and pointed the way toward future study.            Adopting research methodologies of revision and recovery, this latest edition includes all new material while still following the format of the original and is constructed around bibliographical surveys of both primary and secondary works addressing the Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, and eighteenth through twentieth century periods within the history of rhetoric. The Present State of Scholarship in the History of Rhetoric doesn’t simply update but rather recasts study in the history of rhetoric. The authors—experienced and well know scholars in their respective fields—redefine existing strands of rhetorical study within the periods, expand the scope of rhetorical engagement, and include additional figures and their works. The globalization and expansion of rhetoric are demonstrated in each of these parts and seen clearly in the inclusion of more female rhetors, discussions of historical and contemporary electronic resources, and examinations of rhetorical practices falling outside the academy and the traditional canon.New to this edition is a cumulative review of twentieth-century rhetoric along with a thematic index designed to facilitate interdisciplinary or specialized study and scholarly research across the traditional historical periods.            As programs incorporating rhetorical studies continue to expand at the university level, students and researchers are in need of up-to-date bibliographical resources.  No other work matches the scope and approach of The Present State of Scholarship in the History of Rhetoric, which carries scholarship on rhetoric into the twenty-first century.
