About the Author

Carolyn Marie Wilkins is a Professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. She has toured South America as a Jazz Ambassador for the U.S. State Department, performed on radio and television with her group SpiritJazz, and worked as a percussionist for the Pittsburgh and Singapore symphonies. She has released four critically acclaimed CDs of her original compositions and is the author of Tips for Singers: Performing, Auditioning, and Rehearsing.

A vivid memoir and gripping detective story

Damn Near White is both a vivid memoir and a gripping detective story. Inspired by her great-aunt's tales of mysterious ancestors, professional musician and college professor Carolyn Wilkins takes us on an exciting journey of discovery that unearths the hidden history of the Wilkins family. Expect some eye-openers.

The author's great-grandfather, John Bird Wilkins, was born into slavery circa 1850, possibly the son of a female slave and a white slave-owner. A chameleon-like figure who used various names, he taught school after the Civil War, first in Oxford, Mississippi, then in Memphis, Tennessee. He later became an inventor and a newspaperman. Still later, he became widely known as a charismatic Baptist minister.

He was also a bigamist, fathering several children with two different women.

One was the author's grandfather, J. Ernest Wilkins. After a detailed investigation of the John Bird Wilkins saga, the book focuses on J. Ernest Wilkins, and deservedly so.

During the 1950s, J. Ernest Wilkins rose to national prominence during the Eisenhower administration as the first "Negro" to serve in a high-ranking cabinet position. From 1953 to 1955 he served as Assistant Secretary of Labor. He also served on the first Civil Rights Commission (1957-1958) at a time when racial tensions in the South were high, a time when "Negroes" could legally be denied the right to use a public toilet.

The author's painstaking research involves multiple visits to many libraries--from a tiny library in Farmington, Missouri, to Harvard's Widener Library in Cambridge, Massachusetts--and countless interviews, by phone and in person. Her travels take her far and wide, from St. Louis to Chicago, even to a rural cemetery in Missouri.

Damn Near White is much more than the story of an African-American family's rise from mid-19th century slavery to national prominence during the 1950s and beyond. The racial discrimination and obstacles faced by the men and women of the Wilkins family is not abstract prose, but personalized in the ugly experiences endured by J. Earnest Wilkins while serving his country in the military, as a prominent member of Eisenhower's cabinet, and while traveling the South as a member of a Civil Rights Commission tasked with determining if black voters were being denied the right to vote. As the author puts it: "Light and bright perhaps, but definitely not white."

Liberally sprinkled with fascinating family photographs, this is a book you can't afford to miss.

This is a must read

This poingnant inter-generational story is told with such honesty that the reader is compelled to feel compassion. One cannot help but gain insight as to the the complexity of the competing demands of these family members, including Ms.Wilkins, within each of their own historical contexts. The way Ms.Wilkins weaves her experience with that of her family's history makes for riviting reading. Those families who have an Aunt Marjory know how lucky they are. Ms. Wilkins brings forth the real truth and conflicts about color within the race from the presepctive of lighter African Americans,few have acknowledged. This is a must read for everyone who values African American history and appreciates the sophistical dynamics of African American families. Being a part of the "talented 10th" is as much of a responsibility, with diasspointments, as it has been a benefit. Ms. Wilkins reveals both sides of this truth. This is a wonderful addition to every library that includes African American history.

            A Friendship That Lasted a Lifetime: The Correspondence between Alfred Schutz and Eric Voegelin demonstrates that Schutz and Voegelin shared a remarkable friendship: they first met as students in Vienna in the 1920s and found themselves great partners in discussion; years later they were pushed out of Europe by Nazi pressure and went to work at separate American universities. For twenty years they wrote each other, developing their respective scientific works in that dialogue. The letters bear witness to their friendship during the years they spent in exile in the United States, and they document the men’s tentative attempts at formulating the theories of “lifeworld” and “gnosis” associated with Schutz and Voegelin today.

 

 

            The entire collection of 238 letters was printed in German in 2004, but this edited volume is the first to present their correspondence in English and offers a selection of the most important letters—those that contributed to the thinkers’ theoretical discussions and served as background to their most significant thoughts. Editors Gerhard Wagner and Gilbert Weiss do not analyze Schutz’s and Voegelin’s works in light of the correspondence—rather, they present the collection to create a framework for new interpretations.

On a downriver trip between the Twin Cities and St. Louis, she meditates on what can be found in Mississippi river water—state lines, dissolved oxygen, smallmouth bass, corpses, family history, wrecked steamboats, mayfly nymphs, toxic perfluorinated chemicals, philosophies.            Knopp first encountered the Missouri as a tourist and became acquainted with it through literary and historical documents, as well as stories told by longtime residents. Her journey includes stops at Fort Bellefontaine, where Lewis and Clark first slept on their sojourn to the Pacific; Little Dixie, Missouri’s slaveholding, hemp-growing region, as revealed through the life of Jesse James’s mother; Fort Randall Dam and Lake Francis Case, the construction of which destroyed White Swan on the Yankton Sioux Reservation; and places that produced unique musical responses to the river, including Native American courting flutes, indie rock, Missouri River valley fiddling, Prohibition-era jazz jam sessions, and German folk music.            Knopp’s relationship with the Platte is marked by intentionality: she settled nearby and chose to develop deep and lasting connections over twenty years’ residence. On this adventure, she ponders the half-million sandhill cranes that pass through Nebraska each spring, the ancient varieties of Pawnee corn growing at the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument, a never-broken tract of tallgrass prairie, the sugar beet industry, and the changes in the river brought about by the demands of irrigation.In the final essay, Knopp undertakes the science of river meanders, consecutive loops of water moving in opposite directions, which form around obstacles but also develop in the absence of them. What initiates the turning that results in a meander remains a mystery. Such is the subtle and interior process of knowing and loving a place. What the River Carries asks readers to consider their own relationships with landscape and how one can most meaningfully and responsibly dwell on the earth’s surface.

What the River Carries

Lisa Knopp's What The River Carries interweaves the history, ecology, politics, and sociology of three major rivers in the Midwest with her own interactions. The background information she provides has deepened understanding of my own experiences of those settings - the Missouri River of Lewis and Clark, the history of mussel shell buttons in Muscatine, effigy mounds, sandhill cranes, Mark Twain, the struggle to save heirloom corn varieties, and places like the Quad Cities and St. Louis where I've watched the great Mississippi flow past.

Her essays are explorations and discoveries. She listens and watches the rivers and nearby prairies for what lies beneath their outward appearances, showing how the health of human civilizations has always been tied to healthy ecosystems. Knopp also notes that the efforts of humans to control the forces of nature have often resulted in worst devastation, especially the Army Corp of Engineers that is now backtracking on its levee-and-dam solution to control flooding.

Stories of people whose lives have been shaped by the rivers are included, people like Pierre Cruzatte. Cruzatte was an oarsman on the Lewis and Clark expedition up the Missouri River who brought along his fiddle. His time on the river changed his playing from the choppy style of the early 1800s to take on the lyrical meandering and rippling improvisation of the river.

Insightful, personal, and informative of humanity's long interaction with flowing water. This is a wonderful book for people who love rivers.

A River of Knowlege

When you take a journey with Lisa Knopp, you end up exploring a world of experience. In this book, Knopp brings her expert eye and clear prose to the rivers of the Midwest and in doing so, dips deep into the history, politics, geography and drama of those muddy waters. I lived on the Ohio River for years and was always drawn to it, but after reading Knopp's book, I realize how much more story that river must carry within it. Anyone who lives near a river, loves rivers or wants to understand the history of this country from the murky depths of its beginnings should read this book.

Helps me relive my childhood along the Mississippi (albeit a tad upstream from her home)...expands stories & history I heard in passing...affirms that the Midwest is not just a flyover zone, but a historical gem smack dab in the middle of the USA!! Makes me wish even harder that my shells from the button factories had not been lost in the midst of several moves...

The son of an army officer, Conrad S. Babcock graduated from West Point in 1898, just in time for the opening of the Spanish-American War. Because of his father’s position, he managed to secure a place in the force that Major General Wesley Merritt led to Manila to secure the city. The Philippine Insurrection, as Americans described it, began shortly after he arrived. What Babcock observed in subsequent months and years, and details in his memoir, was the remarkable transition the U.S. Army was undergoing. From after the Civil War until just before the Spanish War, the army amounted to 28,000 men. It increased to 125,000, tiny compared with those of the great European nations of France and Germany, but the great change in the army came after its arrival in France in the summer of 1918, when the German army compelled the U.S. to change its nineteenth-century tactics.            Babcock’s original manuscript has been shortened by Robert H. Ferrell into eight chapters which illustrate the tremendous shift in warfare in the years surrounding the turn of the century. The first part of the book describes small actions against Filipinos and such assignments as taking a cavalry troop into the fire-destroyed city of San Francisco in 1906 or duty in the vicinity of Yuma in Arizona when border troubles were heating up with brigands and regular troops. The remaining chapters, beginning in 1918, set out the battles of Soissons (July 18–22) and Saint-Mihiel (September 12–16) and especially the immense battle of the Meuse-Argonne (September 26–November 11), the largest (1.2 million troops involved) and deadliest (26,000 men killed) battle in all of American history.            By the end of his career, Babcock was an adroit battle commander and an astute observer of military operations. Unlike most other officers around him, he showed an ability and willingness to adapt infantry tactics in the face of recently developed technology and weaponry such as the machine gun. When he retired in 1937 and began to write his memoirs, another world war had begun, giving additional context to his observations about the army and combat over the preceding forty years.            Until now, Babcock’s account has only been available in the archives of the Hoover Institution, but with the help of Ferrell's crisp, expert editing, this record of army culture in the first decades of the twentieth century can now reach a new generation of scholars.

'Graduating from West Point in 1898, Babcock served in the army until 1937. He took part in the Philippine War, the San Francisco earthquake, the Mexican border troubles, and World War I, during which he rose to regimental commander while fighting at Soissons, Saint-Mihiel, and the Meuse-Argonne. His memoir covers his service through 1918 from a very personal perspective, with many anecdotes, some amusing, some not, and often harsh words about senior personnel, plus some interesting criticism of American policy in the Philippines. In preparing the original manuscript for publication, Prof. Ferrell (Indiana), the author of America's Deadliest Battle: Meuse-Argonne, 1918 (Modern War Studies) and Woodrow Wilson and World War I, 1917-1921 (New American Nation Series), inserted clearly marked clarificatory passages directly into the text. Reminiscences is not only a useful read for the serious student of the transition of the frontier army into the AEF, but is likely to prove profitable and amusing reading for anyone interested in military history.'

Conrad S. Babcock

I recently purchased Reminiscences of Conrad S. Babcock, as I was conducting research into the 354th Infantry Regiment during the First World War. This book provides great insight into Babcock's mindset and depicts how he evolved over the years while the army modernized at a startling pace. He was a typical officer who was focused on other officers, whether it be his superiors, peers or subordinates, and he devoted very little ink in his diary to the everyday enlisted man. He shared an acrimonious relationship with General Summerall, and for good reason, and, like many Regular Army officers of the day, he had nothing good to say about the Air Service. The author, Robert Ferrell, injects comments throughout the book to clarify or explain various events, which really adds to the book's credibility. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! It's a great historical account!

Professional Soldier

Conrad Stanton Babcock, is, to my mind, a near model soldier. He does everything necessary to take care of his soldiers - as his father taught him to do. He is, again to my mind, rightfully jealous of others many of whom had not served nearly as much time in combat as he and he has a very jaded view of C.P. She experienced international prominence throughout much of her life, from the early 1930s to her death in 1953, but has received little attention from historians in years since. Gregg Andrews’s Thyra J. Edwards: Black Activist in the Global Freedom Struggle is the first book-length biographical study of this remarkable, historically significant woman.            Edwards, granddaughter of runaway slaves, grew up in Jim Crow–era Houston and started her career there as a teacher. She moved to Gary, Indiana, and Chicago as a social worker, then to New York as a journalist, and later became involved with the Communist Party, attracted by its stance on race and labor. She was mentored by famed civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph, who became her special friend and led her to pursue her education. She obtained scholarships to college, and after several years of study in the U.S. and then in Denmark, she became a women’s labor organizer and a union publicist.In the 1930s and 1940s, she wrote about international events for black newspapers, traveling to Europe, Mexico, and the Soviet Union and presenting an anti-imperialist critique of world affairs to her readers. Edwards’s involvement with the Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War, her work in a Jewish refugee settlement in Italy, and her activities with U.S. communists drew the attention of the FBI. She was harassed by government intelligence organizations until she died at the age of just fifty-five. White male historian writes a great book about an important African-American Patriot

Andrews has written an illuminatingly readable book about an important figure in African-American history. This Thyra Edwards biography is a powerful American story - a woman with more courage and intelligence in her little pinkie than most activist white women (or men for that matter) of her period.

If there are any well regarded black movie directors/producers out there reading this review (Spike Lee, are your there?), they would do well to consider making an historical drama about Thyra Edwards, so that the late Edwards (and Professor Andrews) can get the historical credit they both so richly deserve.

She often followed where romance, rather than career, led her. At nineteen, she had an affair with a future president of Ireland, then married and divorced three famous American husbands in succession. Turning from acting to poetry, Gardner became associate editor of Chicago’s Poetry magazine and earned success with her best-received collection, Birthdays from the Ocean, in 1955. Soon after, her life took a turn when she met the southern poet Allen Tate. He was married to Caroline Gordon but left her to wed Gardner, who moved to Minneapolis and gave up writing to please him, but after a few short years, Tate fell for a young nun and abandoned her.In the liveliest of places at the right times, Gardner associated with many of the most significant cultural figures of her age, including her cousin Robert Lowell, T.S. Eliot, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Virgil Thomson, Tennessee Williams, and Robert Penn Warren. But famous connections could never save Isabella from herself. Having abandoned her work, she suffered through alcoholism, endured more failed relationships, and watched the lives of her children unravel fatally. Toward the end of her life, though, she took her pen back up for the poems in her final volume. July 7, 2011, will mark the 30th anniversary of the death of Isabella Gardner at the age of 64. Unlike Dylan Thomas, Robert Lowell, and Allen Ginsberg--all male stars of the American poetry firmament of the 1950s, and Plath, the tragic female among them--Gardner's reputation, Janssen suggests, suffers from not being taken seriously, perhaps not even by herself. Once her fourth marriage collapsed in 1966, the patrician Gardner began to decline, moving into New York's ultra-bohemian (and ultra-rundown) Chelsea Hotel. After her troubled son, Daniel, a prominent photographer and filmmaker in the downtown scene, died under mysterious circumstances, and her daughter Rose, whose drinking had gotten out of hand, admitted herself to an institution, Gardner drifted through a series of alcohol-fueled dead-end relationships in California until finally returning to the Chelsea Hotel to spend a few final years in relative peace. In telling Gardner's story, Janssen avoids the arcane, particularly when dealing with her rebellious years, when Gardner fought against her white-glove upbringing to pursue a career in the theater. But when she became involved with Poetry magazine, she realized her true calling. Although I have always devoured books, as a young Dutch girl even reading while riding my bike, after high school I was sure I was not cut out for university and found employment as an au-pair in London. There I became addicted to British novels and, back in Holland, decided to go to university after all and study Commonwealth literature.  However, when I found that the youngest of my four brothers, a budding mathematician, had read more United States authors than I had, I switched to American literature in order to silence this show-stopper. My thesis on American poet-critics John Crowe Ransom and Allen Tate gained me my Master's degree (cum laude) at Radboud University in Nijmegen. My advisor, Ger Janssens, then asked me how I saw my future,  and when I said I wanted to travel, he suggested I do so in the United States in search of materials for a doctoral dissertation on the literary magazine The Kenyon Review. So, I travelled to America, starting out at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, with its seven hundred or so souls (somewhat of a culture shock for a Dutch woman whose images of the United States had been warped by American television) and branching out to other archives nationwide. The Kenyon Review (1939-1970): A Critical History was published by Louisiana State University Press in 1990. Doing original research while travelling seemed a better way to earn a living than most, so I was happy when I was offered a post-doc position for a biography on red-haired Isabella Gardner. While checking out John Crowe Ransom's editorial correspondence at Washington University in St. Louis, I had leafed through Gardner's correspondence there and had become fascinated with this poet who had been married to Allen Tate--and three others. Just before I went on a year-long trip to America in search of Isabella Gardner, including her love life with Tate, I complicated my own love life by falling in love with the teacher who had supervised my academic work. Reading the love-letters between elderly Tate in Europe and Gardner in America, while keeping up an exchange from America with my own lover in Europe gave my research a whole new dimension. The Gardner-Tate relationship ended in a disastrous divorce in less than ten years, but the Janssen-Janssens one is still going strong.  Writing the biography, however, took much longer than planned, because I, with my love of travelling, accepted the position of Head of the International Office at Radboud University, which meant Gardner landed on a backburner.  For almost a decade, she simmered there, but, accompanied by Janssens and our red-haired son, I added definitive fuel during two recent sabbaticals at the University of California at Berkeley. Now I am back in the Netherlands at the International Office, still travelling after all these years but also still writing on the side.  I think Gardner's life would make a wonderful film with Meryl Streep in the lead as Gardner looking back, while I myself would want to make a Hitchcockian cameo appearance.

Sad, Important Life

An unsung figure in the world of American literature, Isabella Gardner (great niece of the museum founder) created beautiful, intense poetry, as well as being an editor, and critic of major importance.
Using her Boston Brahman fortune to help many major and minor poets, she was generosity itself. (The size of Gardner's fortune is the only major inconsistency in Jenssen's reportage.At times she seems to accept Gardner's self assessment of not being that wealthy, and at other times hinting that her wealth was seemingly boundless.) She survived four really bad marriages, the murder of her son and the unrelated tragic attack that left her daughter deaf and insane. A major poetic talent, she also had a talent for making bad decisions.
I somehow expected that there would be an image of the poetry scene in the Fifties and Sixties as a genial and appealing Bohemian world. It is distressing to read about the Chauvinism, Racism, Homophobia, drug and alcohol abuse, backbiting and intellectual conceits of many of the people one meets in these pages. It is a real eye opener. It should be mentioned that several of the people in the book, seemed to be addicted to Psychoanalysis,including our heroine. It didn't seem to do any of them any good.
The book is well worth reading, but not at all what one expected !

ravishing book about Isabelle Gardner

From the first page on, I was drawn into Gardner's life, fascinated by the transition of this Bostonian upper class girl into one of America's greatest contemporary female poets.
Using wonderful quotations from thousands of letters and interviews, the biographer composes a coherent narration and brings Isabella Gardner to life and right into the heart of the reader.

The vivid, sometimes filmic descriptions of places and people that marked her time, have led me to Gardner's moving poetry.

A life not well known

I thought i was getting a biography of isabella Steward-Gardner, who founded the Boston art museum, but once i began the book and realized my mistake I couldn't put it down. She was an important poet in her time, had a fascinating life, and was well conected in the literary world. Now I'd like to read her poems.

Pierpont Stackpole was a Boston lawyer who in January 1918 became aide to Lieutenant General Hunter Liggett, soon to be commander of the first American corps in France. Stackpole’s diary, published here for the first time, is a major eyewitness account of the American Expeditionary Forces’ experience on the Western Front, offering an insider’s view into the workings of Liggett’s commands, his day-to-day business, and how he orchestrated his commands in trying and confusing situations.

Hunter Liggett did not fit John J. Pershing’s concept of the trim and energetic officer, but Pershing entrusted to him a corps and then an army command. Liggett assumed leadership of the U.S. First Army in mid-October of 1918, and after reorganizing, reinforcing, and resting, the battle-weary troops broke through the German lines in a fourth attack at the Meuse-Argonne—accomplishing what Pershing had failed to do in three previous attempts. The victory paved the way to armistice on November 11.

Liggett has long been a shadowy figure in the development of the American high command. He was “Old Army,” a veteran of Indian wars who nevertheless kept abreast of changes in warfare and more than other American officers was ready for the novelties of 1914–1918. Because few of his papers have survived, the diary of his aide—who rode in the general’s staff car as Liggett unburdened himself about fellow generals and their sometimes abysmal tactical notions—provides especially valuable insights into command within the AEF.

Stackpole’s diary also sheds light on other figures of the war, presenting a different view of the controversial Major General Clarence Edwards than has recently been recorded and relating the general staff’s attitudes about the flamboyant aviation figure Billy Mitchell. General Liggett built the American army in France, and the best measure of his achievement is this diary of his aide. That record stands here as a fascinating and authentic look at the Great War.

He lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

An important, very frank diary

Pierpont Stackpole was a lawyer in Boston when he joined the US Army in 1917. He became the aide to Major General Hunter Liggett, one of the better American generals of the war. His diary is a "front office-level" look at the war. Stackpole's frank narrative gives us the feel of what it was like at a Corps, and later Army, commander's office. Liggett was besieged by visitors at times. He had to contend with his subordinates and superiors all the while trying to run his Corps and fight the Germans. Stackpole was highly critical of most of the generals he met. General Clarence Edwards, commander of the 26th Division, General William (Billy) Mitchell of the Air Service, and General George H. Cameron, commander of V Corps, all come in for some scathing remarks. In fact, reading this, one may wonder if Stackpole approved of very many AEF officers at all.
Editor Robert Ferrell has done a fine job of interspersing clarifying notes throughout; but I don't agree with all of what he says. One example: Ferrell blames General John Pershing for choosing to follow the St. Mihiel attack two weeks later with the Meuse-Argonne Offensive (p. 155), when, in actuality, it was Marshal Foch who insisted on the timetable, and fault probably is more with Foch than Pershing. All in all, Ferrell has done a fine job of supply useful information, though.
I highly recommend this book; it is of great interest to see how this aide felt about US generals and others. One must, of course, read other books and develop one's own opinion about these men, but this book is an eye-opener.

Highly recommended, especially for college library collections

In the Company of Generals: The World War I Diary of Pierpont L. Stackpole is the diary of a Boston lawyer who, in January of 1918, served as an aide to Lieutenant General Hunter Liggett, the man who would command the first American corps in France. Now published for the first time, Stackpole's diary offers an excellent, firsthand account of the American Expeditionary Forces' service on the western front during World War I. Stackpole was a sharp observer, taking note on everything from the workings of his superior's commands to ordinary day-to-day business, to sorting through confusing situations. In the Company of Generals is particularly valuable for its insightful portrait of Liggett, a veteran of Indian wars who successfully took note of changes in warfare more than many other American officers, and thus was better prepared for the revolutions in how battlers were waged in 1914-1918. Liggett's frustration at the outdated notions and tactics of some of his fellow officers are also preserved, in this singularly fascinating glimpse into not only one man's war experiences, but also a piece of the evolution of military history. Highly recommended, especially for college library collections.
