To the eyes of impressionable boys without parents to shield them, St. Louis presented an ever-changing spectacle of violence. Small, loosely organized bands from the tenement districts wandered the city looking for trouble, and they often found it. The geology of St. Louis also provided for unique accommodations—sometimes gangs of boys found shelter in the extensive system of interconnected caves underneath the city. Boys could hide in these secret lairs for weeks or even months at a stretch.

Bonnie Stepenoff gives voice to the harrowing experiences of destitute and homeless boys and young men who struggled to grow up, with little or no adult supervision, on streets filled with excitement but also teeming with sharpsters ready to teach these youngsters things they would never learn in school. Well-intentioned efforts of private philanthropists and public officials sometimes went cruelly astray, and sometimes were ineffective, but sometimes had positive effects on young lives.

Stepenoff traces the history of several efforts aimed at assisting the city’s homeless boys. She discusses the prison-like St. Louis House of Refuge, where more than 80 percent of the resident children were boys, and Father Dunne's News Boys' Home and Protectorate, which stressed education and training for more than a century after its founding. She charts the growth of Skid Row and details how historical events such as industrialization, economic depression, and wars affected this vulnerable urban population.

Most of these boys grew up and lived decent, unheralded lives, but that doesn’t mean that their childhood experiences left them unscathed. Their lives offer a compelling glimpse into old St. Louis while reinforcing the idea that society has an obligation to create cities that will nurture and not endanger the young.

A fascinating portrayal of a serious social issue in St. Louis' history

Professor of History Bonnie Stepenoff The Dead End Kids of St. Louis: Homeless Boys and the People Who Tried to Save Them" is a historical study of the "lost" boys and young men who eked out a living on the streets of St. Louis from the late nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century. In that era, for a homeless young man, violence was a serious threat - loosely organized bands of youths were known to wander about the tenement districts and cause trouble. Sometimes gangs of boys took shelter in the system of caves beneath the city for weeks or months. A handful of black-and-white photographs enhance this accounting of how difficult it was to survive and mature under such circumstances - though the majority of these "lost boys" ultimately grew up to live more or less normal lives, sometimes their childhood experiences left them with permanent emotional scars. Chapters also cover the efforts of private philanthropy as well as public policy to aid these boys; some measures were effective, some did little good, and some were even counterproductive. A fascinating portrayal of a serious social issue in St. Louis' history, carefully researched and studiously presented, The Dead End Kids of St. Louis is an excellent addition to college library American History and Social Issues shelves.

In 1790, Pierre-Charles de Lassus de Luzières gathered his wife and children and fled Revolutionary France. His trek to America was prompted by his “purchase” of two thousand acres situated on the bank of the Ohio River from the Scioto Land Company—the institution that infamously swindled French buyers and sold them worthless titles to property. When de Luzières arrived and realized he had been defrauded, he chose, in a momentous decision, not to return home to France. He founded the city of New Bourbon in what is now Missouri and recruited American settlers to move westward across the Mississippi River. The highlight of his career was being appointed Spanish commandant of the New Bourbon District, and his 1797 census of that community is an invaluable historical document. De Luzières was a significant political player during the final years of the Spanish regime in Louisiana, but likely his greatest contributions to American history are his extensive commentaries on the Mississippi frontier at the close of the colonial era.

A French Aristocrat in the American West: The Shattered Dreams of De Lassus de Luzières is both a narrative of this remarkable man’s life and a compilation of his extensive writings. In Part I of the book, author Carl Ekberg offers a thorough account of de Luzières, from his life in Pre-Revolutionary France to his death in 1806 in his house in New Bourbon. Part II is a compilation, in translation, of de Luzières’s most compelling correspondence. Until now very little of his writing has been published, despite the fact that his letters constitute one of the largest bodies of writing ever produced by a French émigré in North America.

Though de Luzières’s presence in early American history has been largely overlooked by scholars, the work left behind by this unlikely frontiersman merits closer inspection. A French Aristocrat in the American West brings the words and deeds of this fascinating man to the public for the first time.

A French Aristocrat in the American West: The Shattered Dreams of De Lassus de Luzieres is the biography of Pierre-Charles de Lassus de Luzieres, who left Revolutionary France with his family to buy land in America. He was swindled by the notorious Scioto Land Company, yet he chose to remain in North America and move to the Mississippi River Valley. He dreamed of creating a commercial empire; though he never precisely realized his most grandiose aspirations, he was pivotal in founding the city of New Bourbon and encouraging American settlers to move westward across the Mississippi River. His most notable legacy is his extensive writings about life on the Mississippi frontier during the last years of the colonial era. A French Aristocrat in the American West is divided into two parts - a thoughtful biography of de Luzieres, and a meticulous collection of source documents. The result is an invaluable account that simultaneously serves as a primary and tertiary source of American colonial history, as well as of the life and times of a truly extraordinary American. Highly recommended, especially for college library collections.

Ekberg did an excellent job of presenting his research on this often-overlooked but profoundly important figure in the history of Spanish Illinois.Ekberg's style of writing and the organization of the work make a great combination. I especially liked the inclusion of so many English translations of De Lassus d Luzières' papers.
