        For nearly one hundred years, the 92nd Division of the U.S. Army in World War I has been remembered as a military failure. The division should have been historically significant. It was the only African American division of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. Comprised of nearly twenty-eight thousand black soldiers, it fought in two sectors of the great battle of the Meuse-Argonne, the largest and most costly battle in all of U.S. history. Unfortunately, when part of the 368th Infantry Regiment collapsed in the battle’s first days, the entire division received a blow to its reputation from which it never recovered.                   In Unjustly Dishonored: An African American Division in World War I, Robert H. Ferrell challenges long-held assumptions and asserts that the 92nd, in fact, performed quite well militarily. His investigation was made possible by the recent recovery of a wealth of records by the National Archives. The retrieval of lost documents allowed access to hundreds of pages of interviews, mostly from the 92nd Division’s officers, that had never before been considered. In addition, the book uses the Army’s personal records from the Army War College, including the newly discovered report on the 92nd’s field artillery brigade by the enthusiastic commanding general. In the first of its sectors, the Argonne, the 92nd took its objective. Its engineer regiment was a large success, and when its artillery brigade got into action, it so pleased its general that he could not praise it enough. In the attack of General John J. Pershing’s Second Army during the last days of the war, the 92nd captured the Bois Frehaut, the best performance of any division of the Second Army.             This book is the first full-length account of the actual accomplishments of the 92nd Division. By framing the military outfit’s reputation against cultural context, historical accounts, and social stigmas, the authorproves that the 92nd Division did not fail and made a valuable contribution to history that should, and now finally can, be acknowledged. Unjustly Dishonored fills a void in the scholarship on African American military history and World War I studies.

Great potential, poor execution

In many ways it seems that the 92nd Infantry Division was in trouble from the start. Organized as an African-American unit (with all officers over the rank of Captain being white), the various components were dispersed across the country to avoid having too many African-Americans in any one place. As such, when the division was finally placed in contact with the enemy, it was disorganized and insufficiently trained, with uninspired and uninspiring leadership. And when the green unit inevitably performed poorly in its first combat operations, the leadership seized on its performance as proof that African-American soldiers could not perform as well as their white counterparts.

In this book, author and historian Robert H. Ferrell examines the experiences of the 92nd division, and exposes how it was ill-prepared for combat, and how the U.S. Army worked to preserve its bad reputation.

You might expect, with the description above, that the author had plenty of material to make an absolutely gripping book. Sadly, I don't know who dropped the ball, but the book was bungled. Much of the dialogue is strangely garbled. For example on page 22 it says, "The reputation of the Ninety-second, not yet tested, even if Saint-Die was more of a test than it seemed." OK, I removed a parenthetical, but even with it this sentence makes no sense. On page 27 the author states that, "The area was unsafe for scattering forces, as Brown's group captured nine German soldiers and two machine guns." But who was it unsafe for - The 92nd, who scooped up valuable prisoners and enemy equipment, or for the Germans, who could be scooped up without inflicting serious loses on the Americans?

On page 19 he states that, "Elser told Lieutenant Coleman to take a man or himself back and stalk the sniper..." "Take a man or himself?" Did Elser mean that Coleman should take someone with him to stalk the sniper, or go by himself if he would really rather? Or, that Coleman should send a man back to do the stalking or go instead himself if he would rather? And, why do I have to wonder at what the author is trying to say? Shouldn't it be phrased more clearly?

I read a lot of books and almost never have any trouble understanding them, but with this one I too often found myself stopping and rereading strangely phrased sentences, trying to figure out what in the world the author was trying to say. It made the book confusing, and kept my interest from really building. Is it a thoughtful book? Perhaps. But, is it an excellent one? Definitely not.

            In Search of the Talented Tenth tells how individuals like Rayford Logan, E. Franklin Frazier, John Hope Franklin, Merze Tate, Charles Wesley, and Dorothy Porter left an indelible imprint on academia and black communities alike through their impact on civil rights, anticolonialism, and women’s rights. Zachery Williams explores W. E. B. Du Bois’s Talented Tenth by describing the role of public intellectuals from the Harlem Renaissance to the Black Power movement, in times as trying as the Jim Crow and Cold War eras.

 

 

Williams first describes how the years 1890 to 1926 laid the foundation for Howard’s emergence as the “capstone of Negro education” during the administration of university president Mordecai Johnson. He offers a wide-ranging discussion of how the African American community of Washington, D.C., contributed to the dynamism and intellectual life of the university, and he delineates the ties that linked many faculty members to one another in ways that energized their intellectual growth and productivity as scholars. He also discusses the interaction of Howard’s intellectual community with those of the West Indies, Africa, and other places, showing the international impact of Howard’s intellectuals and the ways in which black and brown elites outside the United States stimulated the thought and scholarship of the Howard intellectuals.

Zachery R. Williams is Assistant Professor of African American History and Associate Director of Pan-African Studies at the University of Akron. He is the editor of Africana Cultures and Policy Studies: Scholarship and the Transformation of Public Policy.
