Brothers to the Buffalo Soldiers: Perspectives on the African American Militia and Volunteers, 1865-1917From Glasrud, Bruce A. (EDT)

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, African American men were seldom permitted to join the United States armed forces. There had been times in early U.S. history when black and white men fought alongside one another; it was not uncommon for integrated units to take to battle in the Revolutionary War. But by the War of 1812, the United States had come to maintain what one writer called “a whitewashed army.” Yet despite that opposition, during the early 1800s, militia units made up of free black soldiers came together to aid the official military troops in combat.            Many black Americans continued to serve in times of military need. Nearly 180,000 African Americans served in units of the U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War, and others, from states such as Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Missouri, and Kansas, participated in state militias organized to protect local populations from threats of Confederate invasion. As such, the Civil War was a turning point in the acceptance of black soldiers for national defense. By 1900, twenty-two states and the District of Columbia had accepted black men into some form of military service, usually as state militiamen—brothers to the “buffalo soldiers” of the regular army regiments, but American military men regardless. Little has been published about them, but Brothers to the Buffalo Soldiers: Perspectives on the African American Militia and Volunteers, 1865–1919, offers insights into the varied experiences of black militia units in the post–Civil War period. The book includes eleven articles that focus either on “Black Participation in the Militia” or “Black Volunteer Units in the War with Spain.” The articles, collected and introduced by author and scholar Bruce A. Glasrud, provide an overview of the history of early black citizen-soldiers and offer criticism from prominent academics interested in that experience. Brothers to the Buffalo Soldiers discusses a previously little-known aspect of the black military experience in U.S. history, while deliberating on the discrimination these men faced both within and outside the military. Chosen on the bases of scholarship, balance, and readability, these articles provide a rare composite picture of the black military man’s life during this period. Brothers to the Buffalo Soldiers offers both a valuable introductory text for students of military studies and a solid source of material for African American historians.

The Button Box: A Daughter's Loving Memoir of Mrs. George S. Patton, by Ruth Ellen Patton Totten

"There was never a moment in our lives that we were not reminded that our father was the finest, bravest, most gallant, and best-looking man who ever lived and that he was destined for unimaginable glory. This we took for granted. Being our father’s children was a special influence in all our lives, but the greatest, most pervasive, and most interesting influence in my life was Ma."

The Button Box isthe loving memoir of Beatrice Ayer Patton (1886–1953), the wife of one of the greatest military figures in history, General George S. Patton, Jr. Written by the Pattons’ daughter, Ruth Ellen, the book covers Beatrice’s life from her youth in a wealthy New England family until her death, with an emphasis on her years of marriage to George Patton. A supportive and loving wife, Beatrice was accomplished in her own right as an equestrian, musician, lecturer, sailor, and internationally published author. Courageous and adventurous, Beatrice played a significant role in her husband’s life. Without her, General Patton might never have reached his own level of success.

Although there have been numerous books written on George S. Patton, The Button Box provides a unique perspective on the general’s complex personality as well as a rare and intimate look inside his famous American family, a glimpse of the “Old Army” that formed the cadre of the army of World War II, and a detailed description of life “between the wars” in a society not to be seen again. Most important, though, it is the story of a truly fascinating woman, told with love and a rowdy sense of humor by her daughter.

Review

“[The Button Box] is, by turns, passionate, insightful, clever, and hilarious. . . . Beatrice was a complex person who was just as tough as her famous husband, but whose role in Patton’s life has never been fully appreciated or even explored. . . .  [This book] will serve as a lasting testament to a very unique woman, to a bygone era, and as a portrait of some characters more interesting than one could invent for an E. L. Doctorow novel.”—Carlo W. D’Este, author of Patton: A Genius for War

Incredible Tribute to an Incredible Woman
By Mira
Ruth Ellen Patton Totten has left us with an extraordinary insight into the lives of the Patton family & most especially a wonderful tribute to her mother, Beatrice Ayer Patton. This book does more than present facts as a biographer would. Ruth Ellen tells the story from an insider's perspective. She not only tells the story but more importantly gives her mother's reaction to some of the most trying events in her lifetime & how she handled those events. The underlying theme of the book is the way Beatrice faced life; positively. She summoned courage, dignity & perseverance in the face of trials.

Ruth Ellen makes a great point by saying that soldiers are not the only casualties of war & it is evidenced by the sufferings which Beatrice, Ruth Ellen & Little Bea (Beatrice's daughter) endured, each of them being married to husbands in the Army.

This is an inspiring book that makes you wish you had met Beatrice Patton. Ruth Ellen herself is an incredible story teller & must have been one amazing woman in her own right. The Patton family has much of which to be proud because of the courage & strong character of Beatrice Patton. You don't have to be a fan of General George S. Patton Jr. to read the book. If you simply want to read a great book about a great woman, read this book.

The Button Box: A Daughter's Loving Memoir of Mrs. George S. Patton
By Eliza Bowman
What an amazing window into the true lives of the "Cold Roast Boston" aristocracy, and what a tribute to a strong, multi-talented and insatiably curious woman. Hilarious, insightful, poignant, historical, and best of all...completely uncensored.

you really don't know george patton
By marlin
If you think you've read everything there is on George Patton as I had, then you owe it to yourself to read this book or you will never really understand his life's story. His daughter did a masterful job of putting the family story in a readable fashion and I could only dream of having such an adventurous life as their's was. At last I now know where George Meeks (Patton's black orderly) entered there life and how he faded out after the death of the general.
Reading this book and being aware of the shameful treatment Patton was given at the end of his usefulness by superiors makes me nauseous to say the least.

The Original Rush Limbaugh: Lawyer, Legislator, and Civil Libertarian (MISSOURI BIOGRAPHY SERIES), by Dennis K. Boman

Born at the end of the nineteenth century into a farming family of modest means in southeastern Missouri, Rush Hudson Limbaugh Sr. led a distinguished professional life as an attorney, legislator, and special ambassadorial representative of the United States. Today his descendants benefit from his reputation for integrity and public-spiritedness as a lawyer and member of his community, a legacy that lives on in his family in the careers of two federal district court judges, Stephen Limbaugh Sr. and Jr., and David Limbaugh, a practicing attorney and a nationally known author and political commentator. Moreover, Limbaugh’s character and life has gained wider renown on the radio talk show of his grandson and namesake.            In this biography, Dennis K. Boman recounts Limbaugh’s legal career, which spanned most of the twentieth century and included a number of important events in Missouri history. His legal prowess first came to wider public notice when he managed the impeachment trial of state treasurer Larry Brunk, who was accused of misconduct in office. Among his later achievements was presiding over the infamous 1935 case Ware vs. Muench, in which a young woman sued for the return of her infant son. The case gained widespread attention, and the daily courtroom proceedings were reported in detail by newspapers across the United States. His legal opinion in the case was widely quoted and upheld by the Supreme Court of Missouri.            In the midst of the Great Depression, as a state legislator, although a member of the minority party, Limbaugh led the effort to pass significant legislation, including the more fair distribution of the state tax burden, the founding of the Missouri state highway patrol, and the construction of state roads. In the late 1950s, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Limbaugh to represent the United States as a goodwill ambassador to India.            As a respected lawyer, Limbaugh was selected to serve on different civil rights commissions. First a member of the American Bar Association’s Special Committee on the Bill of Rights, he later was appointed its chair. This committee investigated the circumstances of African Americans, especially in the South, and sought to find practical ways to end racial discrimination and segregation. Moreover, he served as a member of the Special Committee on Civil Rights and Social Unrest in 1964 and 1965, as well as a commissioner on the Missouri Commission on Human Rights and Responsibilities, which examined violations of civil rights and led to legislation to protect non-whites from discrimination.            Boman conducted personal interviews with many members of the Limbaugh family, whose candid answers add invaluable insights into Limbaugh’s character and career. Boman delves into Limbaugh’s memoirs, family correspondence, and personal papers, as well as newspaper accounts, to chronicle the life of a man who served his state and country until his death at the age of 104.

Review

“Rush Limbaugh, Jr., the radio talk host, now overshadows his grandfather, but it is in his grandfather’s shadow in which he grew. In The Original Rush Limbaugh Dennis Boman perceptively recreates the rich one hundred-and-four year life of Rush Limbaugh, Sr.—a poor farm boy who grew up into an idealistic Progressive era attorney; a small town lawyer who acquired a taste for large, even international, interests; a strong supporter of the post-World War II Civil Rights Movement; and the patriarch of a family of talented lawyers and judges. Of special interest are Boman’s chapters on Limbaugh’s leadership of the impeachment of Missouri State Treasurer Larry Brunk and his role as a special prosecutor in the sensational child-kidnapping trial of Nelle Muench.”—Kenneth H. Winn, Director of the Missouri Supreme Court Library & Public Services

About the Author

Limbaugh "Had A Way of Putting Bureaucracy in its Place.'"
By James R. Holland
District Congressman Bill Emerson and his loyal aide Lloyd Smith often worked with Rush Limbaugh on cases involving the EPA. It was from watching the already elderly Limbaugh handle those difficult EPA cases that led Smith to say "Limbaugh had a way of putting bureaucracy in its place." He was so good at that task that the three lawyers actually looked forward to meeting with the local EPA. The two younger attorneys "found entertaining the spectacle of this elderly man deftly negotiating with the bureaucrats." It was one of Limbaugh's gifts that he carefully honed even as a young student in high school. He worked much longer hours than dawn to dusk.
For fans of Rush Limbaugh III's popular radio show, this book will help paint a more complete picture of Rush's grandfather and name sake. Rush often spoke on air of his grandfather who practiced law almost until his death at age 104. He founded a law firm bearing his name.
In eleven chapters, the author examines the Limbaugh family tree. Those chapters are titled "Farm Boy, Intellectual Development and Courtship, Student at the University of Missouri, The Great War and Growing Law Practice, State Legislator, The Brunk Impeachment, The Muench Kidnapping Trial, The Second World War, Limbaugh & Limbaugh, Civil Libertarian" and "Twilight Years." Those titles do a good job of describing the contents of each chapter.
In an interview by his grandson for his show, his true stature was revealed to the national audience. "To his grandson's praise, however, he replied with unfeigned modesty `I am just a country boys." He described himself thusly: "I was never much of a man to strut."
"This biography tells the story of Limbaugh's rise from the farm to preeminence as a lawyer, philanthropist, and civil libertarian. Born only twenty-six years after the American Civil War ended, Limbaugh's life spanned a period of remarkable change."
Rush III "believed that perhaps his defining characteristic was intellectual curiosity. `Life to him was a learning experience.' Not content simply to observe the world about him, Rush Sr. helped to shape events through the practice of law, participation in politics, and the promotion of philanthropic causes and civil rights." If the book has a flaw, it is simply that the author points out so much of Limbaugh's law career in a small town in the middle of America. He wasn't working on
many exciting cases, just the run-of-the-mill legal problems that are a part of most people's lives. It was in debating and speech making that Limbaugh was able to show his grasp of American values, Constitutional Law and his strong sense of what is right, not just what is legal.
For listeners and admirers of his grandson's international three-hour talk show, this book is a page-turner. Every event in it helps explain how and why "El Rushbo' is what he is and what contributed to his conservative beliefs, although his name sake who grew up poor on a farm in southeaster Missouri, was both a Progressive and a Civil Rights advocate throughout much of his long-life. He was also a scholar who wrote numerous legal articles and a series of books "on the practice of law in Missouri for the Thomas Law Book Company. These practical law books were published in 1939 and received excellent reviews from the critics. "It was observed that practice in each court was explained not only to serve as a guide, but also to enable attorneys to proceed intelligently by explaining the purposes of the procedures employed."
This book points out the source of much of Rush III's foundation, core beliefs and his ability to convey those ideas so eloquently. Like his grandfather, neither Rush Limbaugh required or got much sleep by normal standards. They were always too busy working, learning and contributing to this nation's great political debate.
The book contains a collection of family photos and the reader will notice the strong family resemblance between the original Rush Limbaugh and his radio host grandson.
This true tale is interesting enough that even Rush III's critics will find it illuminating. Rush Limbaugh Senior's father "Joseph liked the sound of Rush Hudson, a name borne by a distant relative." That was the source of all the Rush's middle names. This biography is filled with that kind of interesting trivia. As if he wasn't busy enough with his normal routines, "In the late 1950's President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Limbaugh to represent the United States as a goodwill ambassador to India." Who knew?
Rush is worthy namesake to his grandfather. He would be even more proud today.
