The beer may have been only “3.2,” but it was cheap and, unlike British beer, was served cold, thanks to PX coolers. And a constant supply of cigarettes and chewing gum gave GIs an advantage when flirting with the local girls.

 

In chronicling the history of the AES, James J. Cooke harks back to the Civil War, in which sutlers sold basic items to the Yankee troops for exorbitant prices, and to the First World War, when morale-building provisions were brought in by agencies such as the Red Cross. He then traces the evolution of the PX through World War II from the point of view of those who ran the service and that of the soldiers who used it, blending administrative history with colorful anecdotes and interspersing letters from GIs.

 

Cooke views the PX as a manifestation of American mobility, materialism, and the cultural revolution of mass consumerism that flourished in the 1920s, serving soldiers who were themselves products of this new American way of retail and expected a high level of material support in time of war. He emphasizes the accomplishments of Major General Joseph W. Byron, chief PX officer from 1941 to 1943, and his deputy, Colonel Frank Kerr. He also tells how the PX dealt with the presence of large numbers of women in uniform and the need to meet their demands in exchange offerings.

 

By 1945, General Byron could boast that the Army Exchange Service operated the world’s largest department store chain, serving the grandest army the United States had ever put in the field, and today the PX is still a central factor of military life. Yet as Cooke shows, the key to the AES’s importance was ultimately the way it bolstered morale—and helped give our fighting men the will to keep fighting.

An excellent addition to American military history shelves

Cooke (Professor Emeritus of History, University of Mississippi) presents Chewing Gum, Candy Bars, and Beer: The Army PX in World War II, a thoroughly researched history of the Army PX - "a little piece of home" that brought minor comforts of civilian life to American soldiers stationed throughout the globe during World War II. From beer that was actually served cold thanks to PX coolers, to cigarettes and chewing gum that GIs could use while flirting with local girls, the PX had an undeniably positive effect on troop morale and overall quality of life. Chewing Gum, Candy Bars, and Beer follows the evolution of the PX throughout World War II, from the perspective of the individuals who ran it and the soldiers that used it, interspersing fascinating anecdotes amid the solid historical chronicle. Great idea, poor execution

The author apparently relied heavily on government documents and unit histories. More anecdotes and first-person accounts would have made the book more readable. I am a retired USAF member who is very familiar with exchange operations - I was disappointed that a book about such an interesting topic was so dry.

The state offered control of both the lower Mississippi valley and the Missouri River, strategic areas that could greatly factor into either side’s success or failure. Control of St. Louis and mid-Missouri were vital for controlling the West, and rail lines leading across the state offered an important connection between eastern states and the communities out west. The Confederacy sought to maintain the Ozark Mountains as a northern border, which allowed concentrations of rebel troops to build in the Mississippi valley. With such valuable stock at risk, Lincoln registered the importance of keeping rebel troops out of Missouri, and so began the conventional battles investigated by Gerteis.The first book-length examination of its kind, The Civil War in Missouri: A Military History dares to challenge the prevailing opinion that Missouri battles made only minor contributions to the war. Gerteis specifically focuses not only on the principal conventional battles in the state but also on the effects these battles had on both sides’ national aspirations. Provides some balance.

As far as I know there are not many books that provide a general, overall history of the Civil War in Missouri, especially one of more recent date. This book helps to fill that void.

Good Points:
1. The focus of this book is the conventional war in Missouri, not the guerrilla war. Much has been written on the guerrilla war in Missouri and by concentrating on the conventional war this book helps to give a more balanced view of the military events in Missouri.
2. For the most part the narrative was not difficult to understand or follow and is neutral in tone. Being a general history it doesn't go into extreme detail on the events it covers, but enough detail is given to provide a solid basic understanding.

Areas for Improvement:
1. There are a few typographical errors, although it did not seem like an excessive amount to me. The only significant mistake I noticed was on page 119 in the last paragraph where it states that Belmont is located opposite Lexington, KY, the author meant Columbus, KY.
2. The maps provided are not sufficient. The maps in the book are only general area maps and there are only a few of them. There are not any maps showing troops movements or the courses of battles, both of which are necessary. These maps are especially important for people not familiar with Missouri or the battles. The lack of maps was my reason for a three-star rating.

Civil War MO

This is a well written and authoritative account of the military operations of the Union and Confederate forces in Missouri during the Civil War. While not ignoring the relentless guerrilla war it brings new focus on these often small but still significant conventional military campaigns and battles. His analyses of the effects of these operations on the war both locally and nationally are well reasoned and informative. Gerteis has also provided some new perspectives on the motivation behind some of the commanders and politicians actions. As a result their decisions become more understandable to someone looking back with the advantage of hindsight. The author often provides capsule biographies of the many participants which I found at once both interesting, but often distracting to the narrative as well. Also included are a great number of pictures of the often obscure participants, particularly those on the union side.

Aside from the occasional typo, from which a scholarly book of this type is usually free, my only negative comments concern the provided maps which I found to be particularly inadequate. Very often the places mentioned in the narrative are nowhere to be found on the accompanying maps making it impossible to follow the movement of forces. There is no map showing the routes of travel of the forces involved or even of the roads available to the participants for any of the operations described. Although there is well written and detailed description of the tactical situations and movements for nearly every engagement there are no maps to accompany the narrative to illustrate these actions. The map provided for the Wilson's Creek battle identifies some significant landmarks and terrain features, but omits others and is of little use. The only exception to the lack of tactical level maps is one adapted from a Missouri State Park site map for the battle of Lexington during which little maneuver occurred and none is shown in any case.

All in all a good book with an unfortunate flaw which may have resulted from hasty publication. I would very much like to see a second edition with significantly improved maps.

Informative Book

This history of the Civil War battles in Missouri is a very informative book. It is strictly a discussion of the organized miltary movements and engagements which took place in the state between 1861-1865. There is very little information about the guerilla actions in the state.

The generals, strategy, tactics, and formal battles are the primary subject of this book. The writing is very simple and straight-forward, without embellishment or sidestepping into unrelated topics. It will be of interest primarily to serious students of the Civil War, especially those wanting more information about the battles which took place west of the Mississippi River.

In this pioneering work, Thomas McPartland shows how Lonergan’s overall philosophical position offers a fresh and comprehensive basis for considering historiography. Taking Lonergan’s philosophy of historical existence into the realm of an epistemological philosophy of history, he demonstrates how the philosopher’s approach builds on the actual performance of historians and, as a result, integrates the insights of historical specialists into a framework of functional complementarity.

McPartland draws on all of Lonergan’s philosophical writing—as well as on the vast literature of historiography—to detail Lonergan’s notions of historical method, historical objectivity, and historical knowledge. Along the way, he explains what Lonergan means by hermeneutics; by historical description, explanation, ideal-types, and narrative; by evaluative and dialectical analyses; and how these elements are all functionally related to each other. He also delineates the defining features of psychohistory, cultural history, intellectual history, history of ideas, and history of philosophy, indicating how these disciplines play complementary roles in the critical encounter with the past.

Ultimately, McPartland argues that Lonergan has established the principles of a historical discipline—the history of consciousness—that weaves together a philosophy of consciousness with rigorous historical research to grasp long-term trends resulting from “differentiations of consciousness.” His work offers a distinct perspective on historical method that takes historical objectivity seriously while providing new insight into the thought of this important philosopher.

For nearly 2000 years, Plutarch's Lives of Noble Greeks and Romans was considered an indispensable part of the education of a cultivated man. John Dryden (1631 -1700), Plutarch's English translator, quoted a Rennaisance scholar saying that if he was shipwrecked and could take only one volume of classical works with him, he would choose Plutarch because "in saving him, he should secure the best collection of them all." The enduring popularity of Plutarch's Lives among the educated was assisted by the fact "that Plutarch's character, as depicted in [the Lives] possesses a natural charm of pleasantness and amiability which is not easy to match among all extant classical authors."

Despite the acknowledged inaccuracies of ancient historians and their tendency to mix myth and legend with fact, Plutarch continued to be highly regarded by educators well into the 20th century for the models of moral virtue and heroism provided by the historical characters Plutarch depicted. Regrettably, ever since the late 1960's, when protests against chief reliance on the writings of "dead white males" in traditional liberal education made the classical canon become "politically incorrect," the place of heroic models as a valued part of the education of the young has progressively diminished. The appeal of celebrity for celebrity's sake has, rather, replaced the heroic model in the imagination of the young. The noble tradition has, however, not been entirely extinguished. Soldiers and Statesmen: Reflections on Leadership, by John S.D. Eisenhower, is among the now relatively rare books preserving that tradition.

John S.D. Eisenhower, former Ambassador to Belgium, is the son of President Dwight David Eisenhower. He served as an aide to his father as part of his own military career -in which he achieved the rank of Brigadier General-- and in the White House. He graduated from West Point on D-Day (June 6, 1944), immediately following which he joined his father in London. The first chapter of Soldiers and Statesmen recounts young Eisenhower's meeting in London, in the company of his father, with Winston Churchill.

Eisenhower's family and his own chosen career gave him a unique position from which to observe the greatest American and British soldiers and statesmen in the battle against fascism and the Japanese Empire, and the ensuing geopolitical struggle known as "the Cold War." The portraits he gives us of ten historic figures from those periods are lucid, instructive, and fascinating. They are perhaps most distinguished by their humanity; not only the humanity of the heroes of the book as recounted in Eisenhower's personal observations, but in the evident humanity of the author himself. Like Plutarch, it may be said of Eisnhower that his own character, as revealed in Soldiers and Statesmen, "possesses a natural charm of pleasantness and amiability which is not easy to match."

Eisenhower's personal amiability infects the depictions of his subjects. He even achieves the distinction of portraying John Foster Dulles in a way that is likely to blunt the sharp edge of dislike among many for the cold and acerbic Cold Warrior who was President Eisenhower's Secretary of State by describing his warmer, considerate, and admirable human qualities. On the other hand, there is not much even Eisenhower's amiability can do to curve the hard edges of the egotistical Olympian, General Douglas MacArthur. Moreover, his father's eventual break with President Harry Truman, after a period of highly amicable relations between them, may be reflected in the author's somewhat tempered appreciation of Truman's leadership.

The author's political viewpoint may play a role in the portrayals of Soldiers and Statesmen; the humanization of his subjects is, however, the author's main achievement. Each chapter of the book provides a summary biography of its subject's professional and political career. As is the case with Plutarch, Eisenhower's anecdotes about these figures often reveal as much -perhaps more-- about their personal characters as a recounting of their histories. As opposed to looking up to the peaks of leadership from far below where most of we groundlings generally reside, Soldiers and Statesmen puts the reader at an eye-to-eye viewpoint to see both the leadership qualities and the human personalities of these 20th century Olympians. This is made possible through Eisenhower's accounts of his personal observations of, and interactions with, the historical figures he describes (for example, after World War II, he reported directly to General Mark Clark at U.S. headquarters for the Vienna occuptaion); knowledge he has gained from his father's familiarity with them; historical records to which he has had special access; and his personal friendships with family members (such as with General Patton's son, also named George). Soldiers and Statesmen, in other words, provides for readers the kinds of historical insights and observations that we might wish Eisenhower would share with us in long conversations if we were privileged to be guests at his dinner table. The following example from the very first page of the book may suffice to illustrate the vividness of his personal observations.

On June 20, 1944, two weeks after D-Day "the worst storm in fifty years was raging over Great Britain and the English Channel," so violently it could destroy the D-Day beachheads on the coast of Normandy. That was the day young Eisenhower, in the company of his father, met with Churchill. As the author tells us:

[Churchill] slouched in his chair, glaring at the floor. "they have no right," he growled, "to give us weather like this!" So sure was he of the rightness of the allied cause that he took the storm as a personal affront on the part of the Almighty to himself.

One can hear in this story the roar that made Churchill the formidable British lion he was from the depths of his being.

Eisenhower has added to his account of the ten historic figures an Appendix in which he paints amusing vignettes of characters encountered during his own military service, adding to the personal charm of his history.

In sum, Soldiers and Statesmen follows the tradition of Plutarchean biography; or, to cite another ancient biographer famous for his scintillating and often ribald anecdotes, it is Suetonius without scurrility. It is eminently readable and is likely to appeal to the widest audience among those who savor lively biography and are eager to learn more about the personalities of great leadership.

A Book Only John Eisenhower Could Write

John Eisenhower is probably the only person who could author a book like this. He must the only person left in the world who knew the principals of World War II and the Korean War so intimately, thanks to his being the son of General-Then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower and as an infantry commander himself. He knew them all: Eisenhower (of course), Stalin, Churchill, MacArthur, Truman, Patton, Bradley and so on and so on. This brief but rich book consists of vignettes that add intriguing fact and insight into the personalities of the men who to a large degree shaped the war and the world. Under Eisenhower's narration, these giants step off the pages of history and present themselves to you as if you, too, knew them. If you are a World War II and post-war buff, you will enjoy this book immensely. And if you're not --- you'll still enjoy it immensely!
